Adam Silver Claims He Has Every Indication of LeBron James' Return Next Season

Apr 18, 2026, 9:51 PM CUT

The basketball world has been keen to know what LeBron James will do next. For months, rumors about his potential retirement have been surfacing. But a new update from the NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, just changed the entire conversation.

On April 18, 2026, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made an appearance on The Carton Show on WFAN radio. While talking with hosts Craig Carton and Chris McMonigle, the topic shifted to LeBron’s future.

Carton asked if the league had any insight into LeBron returning for one final year. Silver gave a hint, stating, "I mean, I have every indication that he plans to keep playing next season."

Silver also told the hosts he wants LeBron to play as long as he actually wants to play. He also talked about the injuries sustained by James' Lakers teammates Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic. Before the roster took a hit, Los Angeles was playing its best basketball and had climbed to the number three seed in the West.

Silver has a reputation for rarely speaking without backing. This makes his comment a strong signal we have about LeBron's plans.

Still, nothing is officially set in stone right now. Let us look at what the current evidence actually suggests about his future.

What The Numbers Say About LeBron's Future?

Through about 60 games of the 2025-26 season, LeBron averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per night. He also added 1.2 steals and 0.6 blocks while shooting 51.5 % from the field. He ranks in the top 30 for scoring and top 10 for assists.

The team context matters here, too. The Lakers battled constant roster injuries. Yet, LeBron at this age continued to lead the team from the front. LeBron is now in his record 23rd season and stands as the oldest active player in the league.

Back in February 2026, he told reporters, “When I know, you guys will know. I don’t know. I have no idea.” Recent reports from mid-April confirm he has told close sources he has no interest in a retirement farewell tour.

LeBron becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season. Reports note he could easily return to the Lakers, rejoin the Cavs, or even consider the Warriors or Clippers. During the radio show, Craig Carton guessed LeBron might tie his final year to future expansion ownership in Las Vegas. LeBron also still has the motivation of playing alongside his son, Bronny.

His final decision might rely on how the playoffs and the summer go for him. What do you think LeBron will do next season?
