Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals left even Carmelo Anthony, who has watched top-tier basketball for over 20 years, utterly bewildered by the Spurs' collapse.
When discussing San Antonio's spectacular collapse on the 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast, Anthony did not hold back.
"Like finals, on the road, game four. We can tie this up, and we have a chance to win this s*** now. We're getting in the driving seat.”Carmelo Anthony said. We are up 30 comfortable. You nut on yourself like that? No, bro. Pardon the French. Yo, you smoked that, bro. 30?”
Considering the numbers, Anthony's response makes perfect sense. San Antonio led 76-49 at the half, made 11 of their first 16 three-pointers, and had the biggest halftime lead of any visiting team in NBA Finals history.
“Forget what the Knicks did. I'm San Antonio's first. 30, with timeouts and successful challenges. And momentum and the physicality of the game is everything is going your way. You walking out of here saying we're finishing this in six," Carmelo Anthony further added.
The fact that San Antonio dominated the game only made the collapse more unbearable. The Spurs led by 76–49 at halftime, and Towns was substituted for just three minutes following a successful challenge.
They shot 11–16 from beyond the arc in the first half. All signs pointed to a victory on the road that would have tied the series.
The second half saw a 58-30 New York advantage over San Antonio, with OG Anunoby's tip-in with 1.2 seconds left to give New York the victory (107-106).
The greatest comeback in NBA Finals history was pulled off by the Knicks, who overcame a 29-point deficit. It surpassed the Celtics' 2008 24-point comeback against the Lakers.
While Anunoby's tip-in sent Madison Square Garden into a frenzy, there are consequences for Game 4 that go beyond just the scores. The disciplinary warning that Wembanyama received at the end of the night has the potential to shape the remainder of the series.
Victor Wembanyama's Flagrant Foul History Puts Spurs in a Dangerous Spot
In the 2026 NBA Finals, Victor Wembanyama is walking a fine line. One more slip-up and San Antonio could lose everything.
In the third quarter of Game 4, the Spurs star was called for a flagrant foul 1 for elbowing Karl-Anthony Towns in the chin at 9:27. Towns remained on the floor during the review by the officials.
Thanks to that call, Wembanyama was penalised three times for egregious fouls in the postseason. The Spurs are down 3-1 and face an automatic one-game suspension if another unsportsmanlike call is made. This could decide the series.
This isn't Wemby's first rodeo. He received a flagrant 2 and an automatic suspension for his hit on Naz Reid in Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals, but the suspension was later reversed by the league. In Game 3 of the Finals, he shoved Jalen Brunson hard but escaped punishment.
Among the remaining major plot points in this series, his disciplinary record has become increasingly important. The tides could turn for either side if a suspension occurs in Game 5 or later.
