Carmelo Anthony ended years of speculation by discussing his relationship with Jeremy Lin. During a face-to-face podcast interview, he explained the main cause of their famous disconnect.
Anthony addressed the narrative during his 7PM in Brooklyn podcast. For years, public discussion framed their relationship as tension, jealousy, or a clash of egos. Basketball Network highlighted this conversation.
“When you realize this could be something, now the pressure is on me,” said Melo. “I gotta get on the court to help this mothaf–a. If this is what we doin’, then I gotta do what I have to do in order to make this right. So, that’s where a lot of probably disconnect come from, or the narrative came from.”

The situation began in February 2012. Lin became the face of the New York Knicks while Anthony was sidelined with a groin injury. Media attention exploded almost overnight as Lin had a brilliant night on the court.
Anthony said the sudden rise created immense expectations for him to return and restore balance to the team. Anthony was describing the burden of being the franchise centerpiece.
While injured, he watched the team evolving around Lin. The public misunderstood his urgency and leadership pressure as jealousy towards a rising star.
“So, now, they want you to become a fan and a teammate at the same time. Now, was everything perfect? No, everything wasn’t perfect. He was going in one direction. I’m in a whole another direction. Two men trying to figure this s–t out from two different perspectives. My hat is wider than his hat at that point in time.”
Different playing styles added complexity to their relationship. This fundamental disconnect on the court became easy for media outlets to dramatize into a personal feud.
Lin also shared his side of the story during the podcast. He mentioned that they had long private conversations before recording the episode. Lin asked every difficult question he had carried with him for years, and they cleared the air.
Lin noted that he never wanted his career story framed as a battle against Anthony, stating that choosing sides meant they had failed. Both men acknowledged that the outside narratives became bigger than reality.
14 years later, both players pointed more toward pressure, bad timing, and front-office communication failures. Their discussion brings up how Linsanity became impossible to manage.
How Linsanity Started and Why the Knicks Lost Control
Lin faced a difficult and lonely road before his rise. He went undrafted in 2010 after playing for Harvard. He was waived by the Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets early in his career.
He spent time in the D-League, sleeping on teammates' couches while trying to secure a roster spot. The Knicks became his unexpected opportunity out of pure necessity when the team struggled.
New York claimed Lin off waivers in December 2011. Injuries to key players soon opened up important minutes in the rotation. D’Antoni trusted him to run the offense, and Lin scored 25 points and 7 assists against the New Jersey Nets.
He followed that by dropping 38 points against Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. He later hit a game-winner against the Toronto Raptors.
His rise pushed the media to build a hero-versus-star framing around the situation. Front-office uncertainty left players confused about the future direction of the team.
Lin left for the Rockets during restricted free agency in 2012 after New York declined to match his contract offer. Anthony later said on the podcast that not matching the deal was unfair to a player who earned his spot.
