Cooper Flagg Achieves What Kobe Bryant, LeBron James & Others Could Not

A teenager rewriting NBA history was not in everyone's book this season. But Copper Flag defied all the odds by achieving something no basketball legend ever marked in their career.
Cooper Flagg, on April 3, 2026, dropped 51 points against the Orlando Magic. By doing so, he became the first teenager in NBA history to score 50 or more points in a single game. At just 19 years and 103 days old, he is now the youngest player ever to reach this milestone.
His historic game surpassed his own previous milestone. In January 2026, Flagg scored 49 points against the Charlotte Hornets. That game had already broken Cliff Robinson’s 1980 record of 45 points.

To understand the importance of this feat, let’s compare it with some all-time greats. LeBron James scored his first 50-point game when he was 20 years old. Kobe Bryant hit 51 points when he was around 22, and Michael Jordan posted his first 50-point night at 23.
Even Brandon Jennings, the previous youngest to hit 50, was 20 years and 52 days old. After the game, Flagg noted it is hard to enjoy the milestone when trailing by double digits for most of the night. Still, he made sure to praise the Dallas fans and his teammates for their constant support.
This single game was not an isolated moment. It is another chapter of a pattern that is shaping his first year in the NBA.
A Rookie Player Rewriting History This Season
The number one overall pick out of Duke dropped 42 points against the Utah Jazz in December 2025. That made him the youngest player in NBA history to score 40 or more points. He has already scored multiple 40-point games this season.
Flagg is averaging 20.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. This places him alongside historic rookies like Luka Dončić, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan. He also recently surpassed Kobe Bryant’s total for the most 20-point games by a teenager
Ultimately, this historic performance brings up the Rookie of the Year race. Flagg has claimed multiple Rookie of the Month awards, and head coach Jason Kidd has advocated for him. The ROTY race is tight against his former Duke teammate, Kon Knueppel of the Hornets.
Does this 51-point performance, along with many historic records, lock up the Rookie of the Year award for Cooper Flagg?
