The future of LeBron James is again the biggest question in basketball after a tough playoff exit. While most people expect him to stay in Los Angeles, a Hall of Fame legend just suggested a move that would change the league forever.
Gary Payton made an appearance on the Nightcap podcast to discuss the fallout of the Western Conference semifinals. He admitted that the Lakers still sell out every arena because of James, and that owner Jeanie Buss has a lot of power in this situation.
However, Payton dropped a prediction that left the hosts stunned. He said, “There’s a good shot if he leaves, he’s going to Golden State. I’m telling you he’s coming to Golden State if he leaves.”
He suggested that the chance to play in the Bay Area is the main threat to the Lakers’ roster stability. He still has his doubts about whether the Lakers will actually let their franchise player walk out the door.
The Lakers are still one of the biggest attractions in the world, and James is the reason the tickets stay so expensive. Beyond basketball, his SpringHill Company and various movie deals are all based in Los Angeles.
James is entering unrestricted free agency this summer. He played the last season on a $52.6 million player option, but now he has full control over his next move.
Stephen Curry and James played on the same team during the 2024 Paris Olympics and won the gold medal for Team USA. Their chemistry was so notable that head coach Steve Kerr called it a "total bromance."
But while the idea of James joining the Warriors sounds good, the reality behind this deal may be complicated.
Why a LeBron James-Stephen Curry Team-Up Is Still a Long Shot
Curry signed a one-year extension of $62.6 million that keeps him under contract through 2027. With that much invested in one player, Golden State would need a sign-and-trade or many veteran players leaving the team just to make this work.
Both players are chasing one last championship before they retire, and they have never had the chance to be teammates in an NBA game.
Of course, the Warriors aren't the only option. James could easily choose to re-sign with the Lakers to finish his career where his family is settled. There is also the possibility of a return to Cleveland for a final homecoming or a reunion with the Miami Heat.
After getting swept by the young Thunder roster, he told reporters he didn't know what the future held and needed time to decide what was best for his family.
Do you think LeBron should join the Warriors for one last run, or should he stay with the Lakers?
