LeBron James and Michael Jordan, two legends, entered the league with vastly different expectations. According to Doc Rivers, we might have judged them by the same standard, even when James and MJ started differently.
Jordan was the third pick in the 1984 NBA draft after three years with the University of North Carolina. The Chicago Bulls legend was one of the best talents in the draft. However, James was already an NBA prospect in high school. Rivers elaborated on this in an X video by LeBron Factory.
“The difference between Michael and LeBron, when Michael came into the league, he surprised everybody [with] how great he was. When LeBron came into the league, they expected him to be great, so it was already on him. Michael, in some ways, we allowed him to grow into greatness.”
According to the Hall of Fame coach, LeBron was never allowed the grace of growing since joining the league as a teenager. Despite that, the four-time NBA champion achieved levels of greatness that were unfathomable when he joined the league.
“We didn't allow LeBron that. And he still overachieved. LeBron is better than anyone ever thought. You should go back and read articles about LeBron coming into the NBA, and then say he overachieved that.”
King James has exceeded expectations and carried the load of his fame with dignity. He has faced more criticism and successfully transitioned from just TV to a social media world of the NBA, and yet remains clean of controversy.
After 23 years in the league, no one can disagree that the “Chosen One” has gone above and beyond.
LeBron James Hints at 24th Season Amid Retirement Rumors
LeBron’s retirement has been a talking point for the media for the last couple of years. After his 23rd season in the league, the Lakers star has entered uncharted territory.
This is the first time in his career that he is a free agent.
Amid rumors that the 2025-26 season could have been his last, James’ latest comment on the 'Mind The Game' podcast is giving hope that he could return for at least one more season.
“Yeah, I’m still in the moment of like just taking my time. I haven’t even really thought about it too much."
"Obviously, I understand that I’m a free agent and I can control my own destiny if [it’s] being here with this franchise for the foreseeable future or if it’s going somewhere else. But like, I haven’t even really even got to that point. I haven’t even taken my family vacation yet.”
James took home over $52 million in salary last season with the Lakers. Now that he is a free agent, it’s hard to imagine a team that would pay him as much at 41. There is hope that James would continue to play with the Purple & Gold and retire as a Laker.
