ESPN Up for Making Aggressive Play to Snatch Warriors Coach Away From Steph Curry

Before joining the Golden State Warriors, Steve Kerr worked as a broadcaster for eight years. With his contract with the Warriors coming to an end, Kerr is drawing significant interest from ESPN to return to his old broadcasting career.

After the Warriors' 2025-26 season came to an end, there were questions about whether Kerr would return to coaching. However, the growing interest from ESPN is challenging the Warriors' bid to convince their championship coach to return.

"League sources tell The Stein Line that ESPN's top executives have been lobbying Kerr aggressively to try to convince him to return to the world of NBA broadcasting. But the Warriors are expected to meet with Kerr as early as Monday to resume discussions about his status," NBA insider Marc Stein wrote in his latest report.

Kerr hasn’t given any indication that he was unwilling to continue coaching the Warriors. But, he has also not given any assurances otherwise.

"I'm told Golden State has been operating internally in recent days as though it is more likely than not that a common ground can be found with the 60-year-old on a new deal that would keep him in place coaching Stephen Curry."

While uncertainty looms over Kerr’s future with the Warriors, there is hope he will return as their head coach. He has also said that he didn’t want to “abandon” Curry and Draymond Green.

"If Steph and Draymond were retiring this year, I think this would be an easy decision. We all go out together, and the organization takes their new path," Kerr told The New Yorker.

After a 15-year career as a player, Kerr retired from the NBA in 2003. Following his retirement, he began his broadcasting career with TNT, where he served as a color commentator until 2007.

Kerr then left broadcasting to become the Phoenix Suns’ general manager. He returned to broadcasting in 2010 and worked for four years before taking the Warriors HC job.

Steve Kerr’s latest meeting with the Warriors was fruitful

After the Golden State's  96–111 Play-In loss to the Suns, Kerr’s comments in the last minutes of the game prompted questions about his future.

"I don't know what's going to happen next, but I love you guys to death. Thank you," Kerr told Curry and Green.

On Thursday, it was reported that Kerr had a meeting with the Warriors. He met with owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy. According to NBC Sports' Monte Poole, the meeting was fruitful, and there is hope that Kerr will return for another season with the Dubs.

“From what I understand, (Kerr) in those meetings didn’t sound like someone who didn’t plan on coaching next season,” Poole said.

The Warriors’ front office is actively convincing Kerr to sign a new contract. Kerr previously told The New Yorker that he still believed that he would achieve big with Curry and Green in the Bay Area.
