ESPN’s Offseason Grades Reveal the Warriors’ Biggest Risk

The Golden State Warriors and their fans have had an offseason that they would want to forget as soon as possible. With almost every other team making new signings and building better squads, the Warriors' pursuit of signing LeBron James held them back in the trade window.

While all of their targets' futures are now set, the Warriors are running it back with the same squad as last year after re-signing Kristaps Porziņģis, De'Anthony Melton, Al Horford, Gary Payton II, and Draymond Green.

While that certainly isn't music to Dub Nation's ears, ESPN handed out grades for four of those five signings, the majority of which were in favor of the Warriors.

Draymond Green - C

The Warriors center will continue his legendary run alongside Steph Curry and Steve Kerr for another season, signing a contract worth $27.7 million.

"Green declined his player option to give the Warriors the financial flexibility to pursue free agent LeBron James. But after James went to the Philadelphia 76ers rather than Northern California, it made sense for Green to re-sign with the Warriors for the same one-year deal he declined a month earlier." ESPN's Zach Kram wrote.

Green is more valuable to the Warriors than any other team at this point, as his long-built chemistry with Curry and Kerr will be vital for the Warriors' chances to make it to the playoffs next season.

Kristaps Porziņģis - B-Minus

Apart from Green's experience and an already established chemistry with the core, Porzingis is the Warriors' best bet to be one of the more competitive sides in the West.

With a two-year contract worth $40 million, Kram summed up Porzingis' signing in the best possible way.

"This is a low-floor, high-ceiling play for a veteran team that's angling to become one of the lowest-floor, highest-ceiling squads in the league."

The main issue with the 30-year-old's signing would be handling his availability, as Porzingis has never played more than 29 minutes for the Warriors in a game. Still, he is a largely effective player both in the paint and outside the arc, and the Warriors would hope he remains fit throughout the season.

Al Horford - B-Plus

Horford had a slow start to life in the Bay Area last season, but he soon rediscovered his typical form and averaged 9.3 PPG on 59 percent true shooting from Christmas through the end of the season.

"It's not easy for the Warriors to find role players who belong in their read-and-react system, but with his unselfish play and basketball intellect, Horford is a strong fit." Kram wrote.

With a two-year contract worth $14 million, you cannot ask for much more from the veteran who is still a solid rotational option for most of the teams.

De'Anthony Melton - A

It makes sense why ESPN graded Melton's re-signing the highest. Last season, the Warriors had a plus-3.9 net rating with Melton on the court, just behind Jimmy Butler.

The two-year contract worth $11 million with a player option in the second year is the same contract Melton signed last year, now just with better compensation following a strong comeback season from a torn ACL in November 2024.

"Regardless of whether the Warriors' star ambitions pan out this summer, Melton will be an excellent fit on their roster as a do-it-all guard with a knack for forcing turnovers." Kram wrote.

Melton will most likely be a mainstay at the Warriors if he pulls off another solid season and will likely do the 'opt out and re-sign' dance with Golden State once again next summer.

If we go by the biggest risks the Warriors have taken for next season, Draymond Green and Kristaps Porzingis' re-signings will come to light the most. While their risk is on the higher side, so is their impact, and the Warriors would hope their efforts will pay off come next season.

So, which re-signing do you think will have the most impact on the Warriors next season? Let us know in the comments.
