‘Even if I Lost, I Won’: Michael Jordan Opens Up on Taking on NASCAR

Apr 12, 2026, 12:09 AM CUT

From the biggest name in the NBA’s history to the owner of the hottest NASCAR team currently, what was Michael Jordan’s journey like?

Was it just a whim? A new hobby? Or another addition to the list of accolades? The NBA icon, who put up all the fights needed for his 23XI Racing, would deny. The path wasn’t easy, but the reward overwrote the struggle.

“This fight was needed, you know?” admitted Jordan. “And I was going to fight even harder. If I got kicked out, at least I made people aware that change needs to happen in the sport… so I went in with the idea that I don't care — even if I lost, I won.”

In October 2024, Jordan filed an antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR. It challenged NASCAR's charter system, which was monopolistic and violated the Sherman Antitrust Act, per MJ. And the outcome reshaped the sport forever.

23XI went on to open this season by winning four of the first seven races. Winning 13 races and securing 10 pole positions in 6 years, they’re one of the “Big 4” names in the sport currently. MJ was far from losing.

But all the while the 63-year-old legend kept up the fight, this couldn’t have been possible without the amazing team he and Denny Hamlin had gathered.

The 23XI Followed Michael Jordan’s Lead

What started as a partnership rumour, Hamlin turned it into reality by approaching Jordan. Both came together to create the team that would go on to break barriers in the future. But Hamlin knew what it took.

“It comes with sacrifice, you’re gonna sacrifice something”, said the three-time Daytona 500 champion. And then there was Tyler Reddick, the first driver in the sport's 78-year history to win the first three races of a season, agreeing.

“Hearing a champion, a winner, a legend tell you these things”, added Reddick, “it's like, 'Oh wow, you know, we're not that far off. A few adjustments and we're right there.”

From a struggling start-up to one of NASCAR’s biggest names, 23XI Racing has come a long way. And under Michael Jordan’s supervision, there’s more to go.

What major feat do you think awaits them next? Comment it down.
