Fans Demand Change After First Look at Rui Hachimura’s Latest Signature Sneakers

Sneaker reveals generally excite basketball fans, but the first look of Lakers player Rui Hachimura's Jordan Brand sneaker had fans questioning the brand's design.
The official Air Jordan 40 "Rui Hachimura," also referred to as the Air Jordan 40-28 or 4028 PE by sneaker lovers. The sneaker carries the official style code IQ5893-400. The shoe is built on a clean College Navy, Sail, and Chrome colorway. Its upper side features sashiko-style stitching.
The USP of the sneaker is its zippered, fold-down central shroud. This specific design element is heavily inspired by the Air Jordan 28. A leather mudguard wraps around the toe box to offer a sharp material contrast. A Jumpman logo on the lateral side and classic Nike Air branding at the heel. Hachimura’s personal logo is printed cleanly on the insole.
Fans can expect this model to be released in the Summer of 2026. The sneakers will be available via Nike’s official site and Jordan Brand retail partners.
Hachimura made history as the first Japanese-born NBA player to sign a multi-year deal with Jordan Brand. His past collaborative designs, such as the Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Cranes,” are well-regarded.
The Air Jordan 40 series itself celebrates the 40th anniversary of the brand by reviving older catalog hits. The base heavily nods to the Air Jordan 28, famously worn by Russell Westbrook.
Fans Call for a Change in Rui Hachimura's Signature Sneakers
Fans are reacting with a mix of humor, sarcasm, and pure disbelief. Many feel the new design looks far too similar to older, recycled Jordan models. Others are questioning the heavy, boot-like aesthetic.
Some of the top comments highlight a strong desire for clearer design. One user stated, “These just look like 28s with Zoom X lol”.
Other fans reacted with genuine shock to the leaked images. A fan asked, “Is this real???” People are calling for more originality and less dependence on nostalgic retreads.
Another user dropped a sarcastic reply about the entire brand's future, saying, “Time for Jordan to shut it down, I’ve seen enough”. It reflects a real frustration with the specific design execution of this sneaker.
Fans repeatedly noticed that the footwear looks much more like weather gear than a breathable performance sneaker. A fan noted, “Looks like cute rain boots”. Another guy took the joke a step further with a clever reply stating, “Made rain boots because how wet is the jumper is.”
Fans are clearly demanding a change in how these signature player editions are executed. Anticipation remains high to see how the sneaker ultimately performs upon its Summer 2026 release.
