We’re at the end of August, and the NBA free-agent market has come down to just a few names.

Klay Thompson is off to the Miami Heat. Peyton Watson signed a massive four-year, $88 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. 

The Cavs have also re-signed James Harden, and DeMar DeRozan will join Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray in the Denver Nuggets. 

The free-agent market has thinned down, but according to Hoops Wire’s Sam Amico, these five unsigned players can make a significant impact this season. 

5. Cam Thomas

Scoring comes naturally to Cam Thomas. However, injuries and off-the-court issues have somewhat derailed his career. Things never really worked out for him with the Brooklyn Nets and the Milwaukee Bucks.

At the start of the 2024–25 season with Brooklyn, Thomas averaged a career-best 24.7 points per game in his first 17 appearances. At only 24, the youngster can still make a huge impact for a team lacking in offense. 

4. Bennedict Mathurin

Mathurin remains a restricted free agent after a season in which he split his time between Indiana and the Clippers, who retain matching rights.

The 24-year-old averaged better than 17 points in 54 games and is a sought-after name as teams look to bolster their offense. His shooting efficiency remains in question, but his all-around attack game makes him an interesting pick. 

3. Bruce Brown

Brown took the Denver Nuggets to their first NBA championship in 2023. However, his second stint last season didn’t quite live up to expectations.

Although Brown no longer has the same burst, the veteran played all 82 games while averaging 7.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. He can be a viable option for a team looking to build squad depth. 

2. Jonathan Kuminga

With the Cavs going for Watson, it’s looking likely that Kuminga will be headed to either the Los Angeles Lakers or the Milwaukee Bucks. However, the free agent’s demands have created a complicated situation.

As per reports, Kuminga is seeking around $20 million annually. The Atlanta Hawks will play an important role in a sign-and-trade, which is looking highly likely every passing day. 

The 23-year-old’s athleticism and physicality are commendable. On top of that, his ability to defend multiple positions makes him a top pick. 

1. Jalen Duren

Without a doubt, Jalen Duren is the biggest name left in the free-agent market. Coming off his best season, it’s just a matter of time before he signs a contract, most likely with the Detroit Pistons.

Duran made his first All-Star appearance, thanks to his All-NBA regular season. The 22-year-old dropped his best numbers, averaging 19.5 points per game. He’s seeking a lucrative contract, but the Pistons are hesitating to hand him.
