Former NBA Player Issues Reality Check to JJ Redick Over Lakers Ref Complaints

Dirk Nowitzki just delivered a truth to the Los Angeles Lakers. After a playoff loss, the team pointed fingers at the referees instead of their own mistakes.

After the Lakers’ 125-107 Game 2 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the head coach, JJ Redick, criticized the referees. He complained that LeBron James was not getting fair calls on his drives. With this second consecutive defeat, the team now trails 0-2 in the Western Conference Semifinals.

Dirk Nowitzki reacted to these complaints during Prime Video’s postgame studio analysis early on May 8, 2026. “The Lakers are the team that usually always wins the FT battle. This is a little new to them that they’re getting clobbered a lot,” Nowitzki pointed out.

He then explained that teams must work with the refs. Physical play is expected during the playoffs.

The Lakers are one of the league’s best teams at drawing free throws. Stars like James and Luka Doncic usually benefits from a whistle-heavy offensive style. Now, they find themselves on the opposite side of the officiating debate.

The Lakers had 21 turnovers, and the Thunder turned those into 26 points off turnovers. Reaves himself had a game-high five turnovers.

Thunder wins free-throw margin, 26-21. LeBron James averaged 5.3 FTA during the regular season, but has only shot 5 free throws in the first two games of this series.

Redick did not hold back in his postgame remarks. He sarcastically called the Thunder the “most disruptive team without fouling” and claimed they have “a few guys that foul on every possession.”

Then, he explained that smaller players tend to get more fouls because they can be theatrical. He noted that guys built like James have a harder time and just get clobbered without calls. Redick’s anger even earned him a technical foul during Game 2.

This frustration created visible tension between the players and coaching staff.

Lakers Face Rising Tension as the Series Heads to Los Angeles

Reaves showed visible frustration long after Game 2 ended. Several Los Angeles players gathered around the officials near midcourt right after the final buzzer.

Reaves called out referee John Goble for yelling in his face during a scramble for position before a jump ball. He felt the exchange was disrespectful, noting they are grown men, and he just didn't feel the referee needed to yell in his face like that.

The Thunder won Game 1 by a score of 108-90. They also swept the Lakers 4-0 in the regular season. Oklahoma City now holds a 6-0 combined record against them this year. Also, Oklahoma City has never lost a playoff series after leading 2-0.

Playoff basketball becomes much more physical in the later rounds. Every team deals with whistle inconsistencies. Veteran teams know they must adjust to the style of play. They cannot rely on the league to change the officiating overnight.
