'Giannis Is a Rumor': Michael Wilbon Sounds Off on Bucks Star's Playoff Results

The conversation around success in the NBA changes based on results. For one media voice, the gap between Giannis Antetokounmpo’s past achievements and current availability has grown too wide.

During an episode of ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption, Michael Wilbon delivered an assessment while discussing the trade speculation surrounding the Milwaukee Bucks.

“I don’t believe in Giannis anymore," Wilbon declared flatly on the broadcast. "Giannis is a rumor. Giannis hasn’t done jack in the months that matter, which would be May and June, since 2021. Five years is forever in professional sports.”

The remark underscored Wilbon's frustration with Giannis's postseason availability over the past five years.

Moreover, the comments highlighted an impatience with how the two-time MVP's seasons have ended since his lone championship run in 2021.

Wilbon expanded this by questioning whether teams should still be willing to restructure their entire organizations to execute a blockbuster trade for the superstar.

He pointed out that Antetokounmpo has missed crucial stretches of games in recent years.

Giannis Antetokounmpo played 36 of 82 games during the 2025–26 NBA regular season. This marks a dramatic drop from his 2024–25 and 2023–24 seasons, where he played 67 and 73 games, respectively.

Wilbon contrastingly pointed out Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro, a notable target in potential Bucks trade packages, who does the offensive job constantly.

The drop in availability is the main reason behind the debate on how to value a superstar who is dominant but often not available.

Do the results support Michael Wilbon’s claim?

After winning the championship in 2021, Antetokounmpo has earned All-NBA First Team honors by posting impressive per-game numbers.

During the 2021–22 playoffs, Antetokounmpo averaged 31.7 points, 14.2 rebounds, and 6.8 assists before the Bucks lost to the Boston Celtics. With only three game appearances in 2023 and a just five-game first-round exit in 2025, he still managed 33.0 points per game in the playoffs.

The media discussion comes after a forgettable 2025–26 regular season for the Milwaukee Bucks.

The team ended their season with a 32-50 record and missed the playoffs.

When Antetokounmpo did play during the 2025–26 season, he scored 27.6 points per game. But the lack of team success has caused trade rumors to grow as the summer begins.

NBA insider Brian Windhorst has reported that the Miami Heat are viewed as a preferred destination if a move happens.

What are your thoughts on whether the criticism is fair or over the top?
