One of the biggest criticisms directed at LeBron James’ legacy is the infamous “The Decision.” For better or worse, James’ career took a villain arc since his monumental decision in 2010. Critics still blame him for introducing superteam culture in the NBA and even wield it against him in the GOAT debate against Michael Jordan.
However, for his agent, Rich Paul, who was also admittedly against James’ decision (at that time), the criticisms are unfair. According to Paul, given what was expected of James and what was at his disposal, the decision was inevitable and necessary.
“You talk about how he had to go places. So you’re telling me in life, if I’m in a position where things aren’t getting better, and there’s an expectation on me to be better, and I have to depend on someone else making decisions that my career is up against, you’re telling me to sit there?” Paul posed a tough question.
“Or is it the right thing to do to go elsewhere? What are you talking about? That makes no sense. Going to Miami was the absolute right thing to do.”
According to Paul, the 2007 Cleveland Cavaliers were bound to lose in the Finals because the roster around James wasn’t even that of a deep playoff team. He also mentioned the bad roster that was put around James in 2009 and 2010.
On the other hand, unlike LeBron, Jordan played in a different system that put a reliable team around the six-time NBA champion.
“Michael was successful because the pieces that were placed around him. He never had to leave,” Paul added. “They replenished and were able to row together, and all the pieces made sense, and they fit. His growth came from being open and willing to play in a system. That system allowed him to trust in his team and become very efficient in the system, to simplify things.”
The LeBron James & Michael Jordan GOAT debate will not end anytime soon
LeBron and Jordan played in different eras, under different systems, and against different types of teams. There are always arguments for and against these greats in the GOAT debate because their success has varied. Greatness doesn’t have a yardstick, and it’s never identical.
In Jordan’s case, his absolute dominance in the last six full seasons he played with the Chicago Bulls is the ultimate case for his GOAT status. There was not a single superstar who even came close to his rockstar stardom. He was the best player in the world. Jordan was the first of his kind and the bridge between old school and modern basketball.
On the other hand, LeBron has redefined how we look at greatness. There has not been a player in NBA history who has been this great for this long. He is the idea of a complete basketball player, elite at every task on the court. He was the best player in the NBA for almost two decades and has achieved unprecedented individual success.
This debate will never end because they are great in different realms, and as Jordan said, they can’t be compared because they never played against each other.
