Here's What Kevin Durant Had to Say About LeBron James' Impending Retirement

Mar 19, 2026, 12:36 PM CUT

One of the greatest players of the game, LeBron James, is in his 40s. Many analysts and fans are guessing when he will say hise a final goodbye to the court. But recent comments from his historic rival are pushing everyone to rethink.

The unexpected take surfaced after the Lakers' win over the Rockets (116-124). Kevin Durant has been asked to share his thoughts on LeBron James's continued elite play, as he scored 30 points for the Lakers.

“I think he could play for another 4-5 years, to be honest,” KD said in a clip posted by SportsCenter. Durant further added, “It’s not a surprise anymore. At his age, 41, but he looks great out there. When you love the game as much as he does, you’ll do anything to stay locked in and on top of your game.”

Kevin Durant was not just fawning over James, and the stats back his statement perfectly. The 41-year-old Lakers’ star is still producing brilliance on the court.

He’s averaging 21 points, almost 7 assists, and 5 rebounds per game this season. His efficiency rating is 20.5, allowing him to be in the All-Star category even at this age.

Many players either retire from the game or see their skills fall drastically by their late 30s. Even the legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar experienced huge dips in his PPG near the end.

What Do Others and LeBron Himself Think About His Future?

LeBron has been keeping things really simple. At All-Star Weekend in Feb,2026, his take regarding his retirement was vague.

“I don’t know. I have no idea. I just want to live. That’s all…When I know, you guys will know.” He seems calm and uninterested in planning out a retirement as of now.

However, he is putting a foot down on specific future commitments. When questioned about playing for the national team in the 2028 LA Olympics, he shut the door immediately. “You already know my answer. I will be watching it.”

The respect for his consistency expands beyond just one rival. Jordan Clarkson praised him for his relentless grind. Knicks head coach Mike Brown also stated that while he knows it won’t happen, the 41-year-old is in such a shape that “he can play forever.”

His final decision will obviously depend on his overall health and his family. Considering now his son, Bronny, is in the league, and whether he’s still having fun. One thing is clear that, LeBron is still driven by an honest passion for the game.
