Over the years, Donovan Mitchell has grown to become one of the league’s best guards, but even stars need inspiration. And for Mitchell, James Harden is the one whose admiration runs deep in him.
Mitchell appeared on a recent episode of NBA Showtime, where he got candid about his inspiration, and he didn't have to travel far from his stable to find it. Besides mentioning Harden as his idol, the Cavaliers' No. 45 also described the reason why he holds his teammate in such high regard.
Mitchell said, “He meant the world to me, I’m not gonna lie. When you play with another guy at that level, the communication with us has been great for me and the group. His play speaks for himself. When you got a guy who’s a Hall of Famer, MVP, played more than 10 to 13 seasons, it helps us.”
As a significant scorer for the Cavaliers, Mitchell has often followed Harden’s offensive tactics, signature step-back three-pointer, ball landing, and how to maintain calmness.
Mitchell’s comments also show a great deal of respect for Harden. From his MVP title to his role in the Houston Rockets, Harden has adjusted according to the needs of the team, which Mitchell took note of.
This admiration ties Mitchell’s rise to Harden’s legacy in a meaningful way. However, their performance in the playoff series was not up to par.
Charles Barkley Slams James Harden and Donovan Mitchell Over Underwhelming Playoff Start
The NBA star-turned analyst Charles Barkley criticised Harden and Mitchell for their bland performance in the first round of the playoffs. The duo opened the series strongly and won both games, combining for 54 points in Game 1 and 58 in Game 2.
But while many expected them to seal the deal before Game 7, the Cavaliers had to wait till the final game to get the better of the Raptors. And Barkley held the pair of Donovan and Harden responsible.
Barkley said, “You’re two of the best offensive players in the NBA. You have done zero in this series. You’re starting to get the reputation, and James has earned his. It’s starting to act like James and Donovan, where the lights get bright, they can’t handle it. James already has that reputation, and Donovan is starting to get it.’
In Game 7, the Cavaliers closed with a 114-102 victory, with Mitchell scoring 22 points and Harden scoring 18 points. The Cavs will be facing the Detroit Pistons next in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
So, do you think that Donovan and Harden's pair will be able to answer Barkley with praiseworthy performances in the semifinals?
