The Charlotte Hornets have given fans a behind-the-scenes look at the thinking that went into their surprising decision to trade LaMelo Ball this offseason. The footage reveals the move was never viewed as simply a Ball trade.

General manager Jeff Peterson said the front office already expected that moving its star guard could lead to another major change involving Miles Bridges.

“If we trade LaMelo, we’re probably trading Miles,” Peterson said, as per the Charlotte Hornets’ YouTube video, uploaded on August 21.

The comment offers a revealing look at how the Hornets approached one of the biggest decisions of their offseason.

Peterson and the Hornets' front office can be seen in the Charlotte Hornets Reel Access YouTube video discussing a proposal from an unnamed team that was “meeting our price” for Ball.

The organization was weighing different outcomes as it worked through what the trade would mean for the franchise.

The draft was also part of the equation. Peterson explained that Charlotte had two picks and worked through multiple scenarios depending on which players were available after a potential Ball trade.

That thinking eventually led to Ball and Josh Green being sent to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In return, the Hornets received Naz Reid, an unprotected 2033 first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps, and three second-round picks.

The decision was particularly surprising because Charlotte had shown signs of progress late last season.

The Hornets went 18-7 over their final 25 regular-season games, with Ball playing alongside Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller as the team appeared to be building toward a promising young core.

The Ball Trade was bigger than one player

The Ball trade ultimately became part of a much larger shift in Charlotte. Miles Bridges was moved to the Phoenix Suns in a separate deal, with the Hornets receiving Grayson Allen, Royce O’Neale, and a 2033 first-round pick, according to Adam Wells of Bleacher Report.

That makes Peterson’s comments in the behind-the-scenes footage even more revealing. Charlotte wasn't simply making separate decisions on Ball and Bridges.

The front office was preparing for the possibility that moving its star guard could lead to an even bigger reshaping of the roster around Knueppel and Miller.

Charlotte now appears committed to that new direction heading into the 2026-27 season.

Ball, meanwhile, gets an opportunity to start over in Minnesota alongside Anthony Edwards, while the Hornets begin building a future without two of the longest-tenured players on their roster.

The behind-the-scenes footage offers a window into how Charlotte understood the move could trigger a much larger reshaping of the roster.

Peterson's admission that trading Ball would probably mean trading Bridges now looks especially revealing. The Hornets weren't simply moving one star. They were deciding what they wanted the franchise to look like next.
