‘I Won’t Play Him’: Carmelo Anthony Explains Why He Refuses to Face His Son in a 1-on-1 Game

Carmelo Anthony has imposed certain terms and conditions on his son, Kiyan Anthony, to pass first to unlock some 1v1 father-son time.

On the latest episode of the Roomates Show, alongside recent NBA champions Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, Anthony revealed why he is opting to do only drills with his son for the time being.

“Nah, it’s usually drills.. I mean, he had 3-5 seconds to make a shot, he made the shot and ran out of the gym screaming like he beat me… I won’t play him until he goes pro.” Anthony said.

Kiyan just finished his first college basketball season for the Syracuse Orange. There was a lot of hype around his potential after he committed to his father's alma mater.

However, his freshman year was not ideal. Kiyan averaged only 8 points, 1.4 rebounds, and less than an assist per game. Out of 29 games, he started only 2 with very limited minutes. Overall, Kiyan averaged 18.7 minutes per game throughout the season.

If he were not the son of a legend like Melo, who left a legacy during his time at Syracuse, maybe such discourse would not have surrounded Kiyan.

And Melo understands this, not only because he had a great time in college, but also because he was under huge pressure to perform too.

Melo shared how he needs to put on two hats while judging Kiyan Anthony’s season. As a father, he was supportive of his son and did not judge this season as a failure.

From the other lens, Melo said, “You coming into one of the biggest colleges and universities in college basketball, right? So, there’s a lot of history here."

"Your father did it. We did it. There’s history here. The name is on the building. like this is stamped in and etched in stone for life. So there’s a lot of pressure that comes with that.”

Apart from his son's performance, Melo also shared some of his criticism towards college basketball as a whole.

Carmelo Anthony is Not a Fan of How College Basketball is Being Run

Melo used the platform to criticize the current state of college basketball recruiting and player development, arguing that many programs now prioritize transfers over investing patience into younger players.

“They’re not recruiting high school kids no more,” Melo said. “Unless you top two, three, four, five, you’re being overlooked anyway. They don’t think you’re mentally ready. They don’t think you’re physically ready.”

In addition, he opined that the NCAA needs to get a hold of college sports as a whole.

“College sports is wild. It’s a mess. It’s wild. Like I’m in it and I’m seeing it from a business standpoint, from every aspect you can watch this from, it’s a mess. And it needs to get under control,” Melo said.

Melo is happy that the players are receiving the money they deserve, as he also fought for the currently implemented NIL structure. However, he is definitely not a fan of the way college basketball is run right now.

So, what changes will you make to improve college basketball as of now? Let us know in the comments.
