At age 41, LeBron James’ free agency is still a curious point in the NBA. As he approaches unrestricted free agency, the Los Angeles Lakers star has been linked to several teams. But for Charles Barkley, there is just one right destination for the four-time NBA champion.
Despite uncertainty looming over his future, many hope that James will finish his career with the Lakers. According to Barkley, if James decides to stay with the Purple & Gold, it doesn’t do any good to either party.
“It doesn’t do him [LeBron] any good staying in L.A.,” Barkley said on ESPN's Get Up. “Number one, they’re not going to be competitive in the West. And also, it’s time for the Lakers to turn the team over to Luka [Doncic]. LeBron’s not going to play better as he gets older."

Barkley believes the Lakers don’t have a chance to win a title. So, for the former player, James staying in LA wouldn’t be for basketball reasons.
“The Lakers got swept. Even if they had Luka, they’re not a contender in the West. They’re not going to compete with the [San Antonio] Spurs," Barkley stated. "They’re not going to compete with OKC or the Minnesota Timberwolves with a 42-year-old guy. They’re not going to be competitive. So, if he stays in L.A., he’s doing it for off-court reasons.”
The NBA legend suggested that James go to Cleveland and finish his career where it all started. With a better team, Barkley believes that James and the Cavaliers may have a chance to come out of the East.
LeBron James’ Numbers Are Low, but the Lakers Can Still Benefit From Him
At 41, LeBron still has a lot to offer to any team in the NBA. While his decade-long dominance is a distant memory, his presence on the Lakers squad can still benefit coach JJ Redick.
The Lakers star spent all of his 23rd season playing as the third option behind Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic.
When the playoffs arrived, James stepped up in the young stars' absence and led his team to the first-round series win over the Houston Rockets.
LeBron averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists while shooting 51.4 % from the field. Across 10 playoff games, he averaged 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists, and shot 45.9% from the field.
While James can still help the Lakers, he will have to take a significant salary cut from his previous $52 million contract. The funds will allow the team to bring in great role players.
