Jason Kidd Pushes Back on Kon Knueppel’s ROTY Hype With Blunt Take

Apr 11, 2026, 11:52 PM CUT

Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel have been fighting for one of the closest ROTY battles in recent years. Just when it looked like one player was ahead, the debate took another turn, as Jason Kidd stepped in with an unfiltered take.

During an April 10, 2026, appearance on The Road Trippin' Show, hosts Paul Pierce and Channing Frye asked him to elect his Rookie of the Year out of Flagg and Knueppel.

The coach made his stance very clear. “[Cooper Flagg] had a historic rookie season. Nothing against Knueppel, he's a piece of the puzzle for the Hornets. Cooper is the puzzle... It's a little bit bigger than just shooting 3s.”

Kidd emphasized Flagg's all-around impact over a more specialized skill set. While he credited Knueppel for having a great year, he values his own rookie's performance much more.

Flagg’s numbers certainly back up his coach's bold claims. He is averaging 21.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.6 assists, leading all rookies in those major categories. The Dallas Mavericks have struggled this year. Still, Flagg has been their consistent offensive leader.

While Kidd makes a strong case for pure statistical dominance, the other side of the argument is just as compelling. So, the debate is far from settled.

Kon Knueppel’s Case for ROTY Still Holds Weight

Knueppel put up several impressive performances this season to get into the race for the ROTY. Currently, he is averaging 18.7 points with brilliant shooting splits. The Hornet No. 7 is also leading the league with over 268 three-pointers this season.

The Charlotte Hornets are fighting for a playoff spot in the East and have lately enjoyed a long winning streak. Knueppel was a key contributor to that impressive run.

Flagg ranks higher in total creation and player efficiency, while Knueppel beats him in plus-minus and floor spacing. Knueppel also wins in the durability factor. He has played 79 games compared to Flagg’s 69.

The final decision now is in the hands of a global panel. Kidd himself noted the historical weight of the race and compared it to the 2003 battle between LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony.

However, Knueppel still held the top spot on the April 8 NBA Rookie Ladder. Who do you think truly deserves to win the Rookie of the Year award this season?
