Jerry West enthusiasts can now enjoy several facets of his life with the release of his documentary, Jerry West: The Logo, on Prime Video. However, it also featured Jerry's son, Ryan West, sharing a few incidents involving Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.

Recalling the first meeting with Bryant, Ryan said. "I picked him up at the hotel, took him to his workout. He didn’t have a license.” He added, "I was probably his first friend in Los Angeles."

The relationship grew as time passed by, coming full circle during Bryant’s legendary last game. “The last game of his career, he told me, ‘The first time I was ever on the 405 was in your car,” Ryan disclosed.

Shaquille O’Neal also shared an interesting story in the documentary about how Jerry West convinced him to join the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996. According to Shaq, West invited him for a meeting in a hotel at 3 am. He welcomed him in a Versace robe, and this meeting convinced him to leave Orlando for Los Angeles.

However, Ryan stated, “I don’t think Shaq’s recollection of the night is really what happened. I love how the story has evolved to him being in a Versace robe. And my dad never wore a robe… It’s for entertainment purposes. It’s great,”

Stories like these only scratch the surface of who Jerry West truly was, leading into the larger legacy captured in Jerry West: The Man Behind the Logo.

Jerry West’s Post-Career Contributions Towards the Lakers

Jerry West, known as “The Logo” built a legacy that extended far beyond the figure that represents the NBA. His on-court brilliance with the Lakers had its own era, but it’s his off-court impact that actually created basketball history.

West played a crucial role in assembling teams, including the iconic pairing of Kobe and Shaquille in the Lakers' stable. He helped build a team that dominated the league. He also had good relationships with several other noted names, including Michael Jordan, who was like a brother to West.

The documentary doesn’t just revisit Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. It shows Jerry West’s legacy. Not just as “The Logo”, but as a man whose influence was on a large scale, shaping lives as much as champions.
