A lot of unforgettable moments took place at Madison Square Garden. The New York Knicks made the greatest comeback in NBA Finals history with many celebrities around at the edge of their seats watching them do the impossible. Such wasn’t the mood a few minutes ago, when a big name was ready to leave the building in disappointment.
Longtime friends, tennis legend John McEnroe and Curb Your Enthusiasm actor Larry David, were among A-listers who had courtside seats for Game 4 on Wednesday. By the 3rd quarter, the Knicks were down 29 points. That’s when David proposed leaving the arena to the former world No. 1.
" We were sort of a little negative at 71-42," McEnroe said about David. "He was like, "Let’s get outta here."
McEnroe, who has personally tasted the pinnacle of competitive sports, had to convince David to believe, especially given how the Knicks have been playing this season.
“'I go, "Larry, listen, over the years it hasn’t come up the way we expected [as Knicks fans]." You know, I’ve blown a couple [of] big leads in my life… It was sort of like, "Here we go again, we’re gonna lose this. Something bad’s gonna happen.’ McEnroe said as reported by DailyMail.com
The Knicks performed better than the seven-time Grand Slam champion and his friend expected. The Knicks defied all hurdles and took the first lead of the game with less than two minutes left in regulation. They completed the comeback with a put-back two-point shot from OG Anunoby and won the game 107-106. The Knicks believed, and so did their fans.
"'I said, "Larry, let’s get positive here. If they get it down to 25, 21, 18, it’s 15 at the end of the [third] quarter." This type of stuff. "Let’s keep it positive,"' he continued.
“'That’s the most positive I’ve ever been at a game, and I’ve been at a lot of sporting events over the course of my 56 years of coming to Knicks games when I was 8 years old,’” McEnroe added.
It proved to be a lifetime experience for the actor. When the Knicks cut the lead to just four points with over four minutes left in the game, David was running around the sideline, fist-bumping everyone. He almost fell to the ground when Josh Hart missed a layup in crunch time.
John McEnroe believes the Knicks will win the NBA title
The New York Knicks hold a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals. Only one team has ever lost this lead in NBA Finals history. It was the Golden State Warriors in 2016 against LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers. However, given how elite and resilient the Knicks have been in this postseason, it is hard to imagine them losing the series.
However, this is the first time in 53 years that the Knicks are playing like the clear favorite. For die-hard Knicks fans like McEnroe, it is hard not to feel the anxiety. But despite that, the tennis legend believes that the Knicks can win it all.
“I’ve been waiting a long time for this,” he said during the Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday before attending Game 4. “So, I’m super excited, and I’m holding my breath and my heart is beating a little harder than normal, but I think we’re gonna do it.”
The Knicks will be in San Antonio on Saturday for Game 1. They have won both Game 1 & 2 at Frost Bank Arena, but counter attack from hosts are expected.
