Karl-Anthony Towns picks his 'next NBA superstar' after 2026 NBA championship win

A few weeks after lifting the trophy, Karl-Anthony Towns decided to share his thoughts on the future of professional basketball. The news broke during a live panel discussion at Fanatics Fest NYC.

While speaking to fans, the veteran identified a specific rival as the next face of the league. He believed Victor Wembanyama is the next face of the NBA.

“He’s a generational talent, the next superstar of the league… but I wholeheartedly believe in my heart that I’m also a generational talent,” Towns said.

Towns spent time discussing what it was like to duel Wembanyama on the sport's biggest stage. The response balanced respect for a young rival with strong self-belief in his own growing legacy.

There are plenty of reasons why Towns labeled Wemby as the league's next superstar. Despite the Spurs losing the series in five games, Wembanyama averaged 26.0 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and an elite 3.6 blocks per game against New York.

Over the entire 22-game playoff run, he averaged 23.8 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game. At just 22 years old, the young star combines size and length with guard-like shooting and ball-handling skills.

Towns used the moment to assert his own place among the elite players in basketball. Winning a ring against a hyped young team gave the veteran center all the validation he needed.

Karl-Anthony Towns proved his status during the Knicks' title run

It was the first NBA title of Towns’ career, and it brought the city of New York its first basketball championship since 1973.

His regular-season production showed why New York traded for him in the first place. According to statistical data from StatMuse, Towns played 75 games during the 2025-26 regular season.

He averaged 20.1 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in 31.0 minutes per game. He was shooting 50.1% from the field and 36.8% from three-point range. These numbers earned him his 6th career All-Star selection.

KAT carried the same form into the five-game championship series. He averaged 13.0 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.0 blocks per game during the Finals.

The 2026 Finals was a classic clash between two eras of basketball talent. On one side stood an experienced and championship roster. On the other side was a rising young Wemby carrying the Spurs on his shoulders.

Even though Wembanyama fell short in his first trip to the Finals, the experience set the stage for a future rivalry. Towns gave credit where it was due, crowning Wembanyama as the future of the sport.

Do you think Wembanyama takes over the league next year, or will Towns and the Knicks keep the crown in New York?
