Kevin Durant Points to Biggest Difference Between Michael Jordan & LeBron's NBA Career

2-Time NBA Champion has chipped in again on the endless debate about the two greatest icons. Kevin Durant has backed his earlier opinion regarding the comparison between the different career paths of Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

According to him, the main difference comes down to MJ taking significant breaks during his time. On the other side, LeBron James has been consistent for years. Durant once again made it clear that his stance was established in the reality of two different career paths.

“It’s true,” Durant said. “MJ took time off. It’s times where he was like, ‘I’m sick of the game.’ And that’s what he did. Bron, he played straight through. I’m sure it was times when he was sick of the game and didn’t want to play.

Sick of all the b.s. that comes with the game. It was a different time. He probably had more of a shield around him than MJ had at the time. It’s different eras, but guys choose their paths how they want to choose them.”

The originality of this famous conversation goes back to a podcast appearance where Durant shared his opinions on sustained excellence.

He initially commented, “You have to recommit and sign that contract with yourself. Some people say, ‘I want to go play baseball. Yeah, and I want to come back.’ Or some people say, "I'm gonna go 22 straight."

MJ withdrew from basketball at his absolute peak. He famously retired in 1993 to follow a professional baseball career, once again in 1998, and then finally retired from the sport in 2003.

Kevin Durant was not degrading his brilliance but was stressing out about how these temporary retirements offered MJ mental peace that LeBron never utilized.

The Lakers’ forward, LeBron James, has redefined longevity by playing more than  20 consecutive seasons without a career break. This next level of consistency is precisely framed as a contrast to MJ.

A decade long debate of Michael Jordan vs LeBron James

When comparing MJ and LeBron, the debate breaks down into  2 different points of view. Do we prioritize moments of grace or the ability to defy age and time?

For Michael Jordan, the debate starts and ends with the 1990s. His case is laid on the foundation of “unparalleled peak”, a phase of the seasons where the NBA trophy was basically his personal property.

Jordan’s 6-0 finals record remains the benchmark. For many, his “breaks,” as mentioned by Durant, didn’t hurt his legacy. They preserved the aura of a legend who never lost a final series in his entire career.

Apart from 5 NBA MVPs, 10 scoring titles, he also bagged the Defensive Player of the Year award in 1988 and 9 All-Defensive First Team Selections. After over two decades of his retirement, he still holds the record of the highest regular-season (30.1 ppg) and playoff (33.5 ppg) scoring averages.

If MJ stands for ultimate peak, LeBron James denotes ultimate career. By playing straight through 23 NBA seasons, LeBron has achieved something that feels like it's out of a video game.

LeBron is a 4x NBA Champion with 4x NBA Finals MVP, alongside receiving 4x NBA MVP honors. He became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer by entering the 40,000-Point club. He is the first and only player to reach this milestone.

The debate exists because two legendary icons played under different pressures. It completely depends on one’s own perspective. If you believe greatness is measured by reaching absolute perfection, then Michael Jordan can be your choice.

Although if you believe greatness is assessed by the sheer pressure of two decades of prime, LeBron James dominates the debate.
