Kevin Durant finally returned to Phoenix on Tuesday night for his first game back since an offseason trade. However, a brief and heated exchange with Dillon Brooks on the floor stole the spotlight. 

On April 7, 2026, the Houston Rockets were up against the Phoenix Suns. Brooks constantly talked trash to get into his opponent's head. He was trying everything to disrupt Durant's rhythm.

Durant turned directly to Brooks and said, "My worst season is better than your best season." 

The Rockets eventually won the game 119-105. KD scored 24 points, including 5 three-pointers. The victory marked Houston's 7th consecutive win. 

After the game, when reporters asked about the trash talk, he made it clear that Brooks does not fuel his competitive fire. Durant stated, “I’m not giving him that — he doesn’t get that kind of credit with me. Maybe some other guys may turn up because he talks to them, but he’s not that important or special to me to get me going.”

Brooks has tried the same on-court thing with Durant before in past games. Durant admitted in 2023 that he respected Brooks' raw and unfiltered approach to the game.

Both of these players have faced off around 15 times, with KD averaging 26 points to Brooks' 13 in those games. 

Brooks has been productive for the Suns this year, hitting stretches where he averages over 20 points a game. However, his usual mental tactics this time backfired against a veteran star.
