Kevin Durant Triggers Backlash With His Take Against Dwyane Wade

Apr 11, 2026, 3:11 PM CUT

A resurfaced podcast clip is getting a lot of traction online right now. What started as a normal basketball chat is now catching a lot of heat. The drama involves Kevin Durant and Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade.

The comments from Durant came during his appearance on Episode 003 of Fred VanVleet’s Unguarded Podcast that released on December 17, 2025. The Houston Rockets forward expressed his thoughts about the popular debate comparing the two NBA legends, James Harden and Dwayne Wade.

Durant gave his two cents on Wade's championship runs and said, “A lot worked in D Wade's favor for him to win that championship… I feel like they both are winning players… D Wade didn’t have to do as much for the last 2 championships.” However, he never tried to belittle any of them, stating that he views both guards as stalwarts.

KD praised Wade’s incredible 2006 championship run. But he contrasted that with his 2012 and 2013 titles. During those years, LeBron James and Chris Bosh joined Wade to form a superteam in Miami. His main point was that Wade did not carry the same heavy individual burden in those later runs.

This brings up the Harden versus Wade legacy debate. Wade is a 3x NBA champion and a Finals MVP. On the other side, Harden is currently in his 17th season. After a February 2026 trade from the Clippers to the Cavaliers, roughly in 70 games, he is averaging 23.7 points and 8.0 assists, shooting 37.6% from three.

However, NBA fans took these comments by KD very differently and immediately triggered the backlash.

Fans Call Out Kevin Durant Over Irony In His Comment

The main issue fans had with Durant's views was hypocrisy, as they linked his two championships with the Golden State Warriors to his comments. Fans argued that Durant also benefited heavily from joining a historically stacked superteam.

One user noted, “Yea KD didn’t have to do as much for both his championships.” Another fan echoed a similar thought, stating, “KD would know about not doing much for winning a Championship.” A third reply added, “KD is full of B*, and he got a lot of nerve talking about what Wade had to do when he had to go to Golden State to win. SMH…”

These comments reveal how fans used Durant's own history to invalidate his criticism of Wade.

Some fans took the criticism even further. One fan asked, “Wade didn't have to do much? W** kind of take is that?” Another fan fired back with, “This coming from a guy who didn’t have to do much, as the #2 guy, to get his chips.”

These specific replies show a deep frustration among fans over Durant diminishing Wade’s role in the Miami Heat's 2012 and 2013 championship-winning runs. Most called out KD’s perspective as they counted him guilty of the same issues that he criticized Wade for.

This entire situation shows how basketball legacy discussions always depend on context just as much as actual achievements.
