The Miami Heat’s offseason has already undergone significant changes, and their next big move could bring in another major player. After making a blockbuster move for Giannis Antetokounmpo, Miami is now looking for the right players to build around its new star.
Among the players linked to the Heat, Klay Thompson is starting to look like a real option. The four-time NBA champion has been linked with Miami for some time.
The situation could become more serious if the Dallas Mavericks cannot find a trade for him. NBA reporter Evan Sidery said Thompson’s team could seek a buyout in that case. Sidery also said that Thompson and the Heat have mutual interest.

Reported by Hunter Cookston of The Sporting News, this possibility got more attention after Marc Stein of The Stein Line shared his latest report. Stein said that Miami “continues to sit at the front of the line” among the teams that want Dallas to buy out Thompson.
This is important for Miami because Thompson could fix one of the team’s biggest problems: shooting. Giannis is expected to lead the Heat’s offense, so having a great outside shooter next to him could give the team more space on the court.
Thompson’s shooting could also work very well with Giannis and Bam Adebayo. He would not just be another big-name player for Miami. He could fill an important need on the team.
For now, nothing is official. Thompson is still with Dallas, and the Mavericks have not completed a buyout. However, the latest reports make a move to Miami look more likely.
Why Klay Thompson Could Be the Missing Piece for Miami
Miami’s need for another scoring option became even clearer after Bradley Beal chose the Los Angeles Clippers. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Beal agreed to a two-year, $13.2 million contract with the Clippers. The deal also includes a player option for the second season.
The Heat therefore missed another experienced scorer after making their biggest move of the summer by adding Antetokounmpo.
According to the same report by The Sporting News, Miami has been interested in Thompson for some time. This makes him a natural target because the Heat need more shooting.
Thompson could give Miami a top-level catch-and-shoot player who can benefit from the attention Giannis gets inside. His shooting could make defenses respect the outside shot instead of putting all their focus on Antetokounmpo.
Evan Sidery also talked about the possibility of Thompson playing with Giannis and Adebayo. He also mentioned that LeBron James could become part of the picture.
The Heat still have some work to do before any Thompson deal becomes official. However, Marc Stein reported that Miami is at the front of the line if Thompson becomes available through a buyout. This makes a move to Miami look more possible.
