Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown is spending his free time doing something few would ever expect. He has picked up a new physical hobby right before the playoffs that's inspired by Kobe Bryant.

A report by Burtland Dixon via ClutchPoints highlighted the story of Brown Bryant-esque habit. The buzz started from a livestream. Brown shared a video of himself learning tap dance steps. This was not just for fun but had a specific purpose.

Brown explained the exact reason behind his new routine, saying, "Someone I know who used to work with Kobe used to tell me that he used to work and do tap dancing." He noted it was meant to improve ankle mobility, foot flexibility, and rhythm on the floor.

The original idea of this routine dates back to the 2000 NBA Finals against the Indiana Pacers. Bryant suffered his career-worst sprained ankle in Game 2. He missed Game 3 but pushed through to return for Game 4.

Instead of regular rehab, Kobe got creative. He talked about this in his 2018 book, The Mamba Mentality: How I Play. The Lakers legend also hired a professional instructor and went to the studio all summer.

Bryant once publicly stated, "I took tap dancing lessons. No kidding." He explained that tap dancing was the best-suited training in the world for his condition. Bryant even noted that dancers put more strain on their bodies than athletes do.

This move brown is highly intentional. He believes in giving everything when it comes to his body and game.

Jaylen Brown’s Habit of Unconventional Growth

Brown has studied players like Luka Garza to master deceleration techniques. Earlier in the 2025-26 season, he took salsa dancing lessons. After dropping 50 points in a January game, Brown tweeted, "Was it the salsa lesson last night? I gotta dance more often lol."

Brown has also engaged with scientists in nostalgic, classroom-style moments referencing Bill Nye. He explores performance and mental-training angles constantly.

He is adopting this tactic at the perfect time. His ball-handling has already improved during the 2025-26 season. Tap dancing adds a quick, precise layer to his balance. He entered the 2026 playoffs feeling much better physically than he did last year.

Can you think of any other unconventional activity that players can do to improve their game?
