Julius Erving sparked a new GOAT debate, with this thoguhts on why LeBron James beats out Kobe Bryant. In GOAT debates, some put LeBron James behind Michael Jordan for his rings, while some have put him below Kobe Bryant, as they believe James doesn’t possess the ruthless gene.
For Dr. J., LeBron has a place in a category of his own. The NBA legend was recently asked by sports journalist Dave Schmulenson (The Schmo) to pick between LeBron and Kobe. The Philadelphia 76ers legend showed no hesitation in his choice and called Bryant the imitation of Jordan
“I think LeBron is one of one. Kobe’s another imitation of Michael Jordan. There have been many imitations of Michael, Kobe, and me, and other people. LeBron is one of one. So, I’m gonna give him this pick.”
In terms of competitive stamina, Bryant hardly had competition in his generation. He is arguably the most skilled scorer and a legend that remains alive in the hearts of thousands of Los Angeles Lakers fans. Bryant's legacy is more than basketball.
In terms of longevity and the true image of a complete basketball player, LeBron stands taller. Even as his body has waned, James remains among the top players in the league. At 41 years of age, he is the oldest active player in the league.
In 60 games this season, James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. He shot 51.5% from the field and 31.7% from the 3-point line. He has led the subpar Los Angeles Lakers to a series win against the Houston Rockets in this playoff.
It’s all mental for the four-time champion, and his body just follows.
NBA Legend Reveals Why LeBron James Can Dominate at 41
Dr. J isn’t the only legend who is in awe of LeBron James’ greatness. The King has been in the league for over two decades, and he is still among the top ones in the NBA. While he was gifted with athletic prowess, the Lakers star maintains his longevity through strict personal discipline.
For NBA legend Tracy McGrady, James’ being religious with his fitness routine has been a big part of his success at age 41. McGrady elaborated on this during the 'Cousins with Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady' podcast.
“Being in tip-top shape is part of the game, right? Cardiovascular’s part of the game. That’s why LeBron James is so f****** great because he outplays and outlasts everybody in the game."
"A playoff game, you look down there at the fourth quarter at him, Game 7, that m********** ain’t sweating, man. He fresh.”
LeBron has by far played the most minutes in NBA history, regular season and playoffs combined. Even at age 41 and with the highest mileage on his legs, he is among the top 35 players in the league in minutes per game on the floor.
How many seasons do you think LeBron can continue in this league? Let us know in the comments.
