Victor Wembanyama is acknowledged by most players in the NBA. LeBron James took it one step further and addressed why the 22-year-old Spurs star is unmatched in the history of the NBA, and just how teams can try to stop him this year.
Speaking on the Mind the Game podcast, James outlined the only realistic blueprint for attacking Wembanyama's defense.
"Obviously, you've got to have the right personnel. The first thing that comes to mind is whether you can put five playmakers or five shooters on the floor at the same time with size. A lot of teams can't do that, but OKC has that ability, Cleveland has that ability, and the Knicks have that ability to put four or five guys on the floor who can shoot, pass, and dribble."

In-game 2, OKC maximized Isaiah Hartenstein's minutes to slow Wembanyama down and force him into high-post situations. The Spurs created a slow half-court game by forcing 21 San Antonio turnovers, leaving Wembanyama with fewer opportunities to push through teams.
That's exactly the kind of man-to-man defensive adjustment that James was alluding to when he cited OKC as one of the few teams capable of playing against him.
But James also made clear that the bigger conversation is not about tactics. It is about understanding what Wembanyama actually is.
"His ability to catch the ball with his back toward the basket, or half of his body, and be able to find the rim before he even lands? That is coordination that we've never seen before, and it's not just because he's tall. It's because he has the ability to do things that we haven't seen in our league ever," James added.
Every word is backed up by the numbers from the Western Conference Finals. Wembanyama posted an average of 31 points, 20.5 rebounds, and four blocks in two games, with a career-high 41 points and 24 boards from Game 1, driving him into the record books with Wilt Chamberlain.
But those record numbers are only part of the story. To understand how Wembanyama got here is to understand the equally compelling work and guidance behind the performances.
How the Kobe Bryant Connection Shaped Victor Wembanyama's Game
Victor Wembanyama did not enter the 2025-26 season on cruise control. A deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder had cut short his sophomore season by 38 games, and the Spurs still had to prove they belonged in the playoff conversation. Both questions needed answers.
,
He replied to them. Wembanyama missed just 18 games this season, finished third in MVP voting, and helped the San Antonio Spurs to the Western Conference Finals, where he is averaging 22.2 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 4.0 blocks a game. But his development was shaped by an unlikely influence in the background.
Lakers GM Rob Pelinka, who formerly represented Kobe Bryant, set up a meeting last April with Wembanyama’s agent Bouna Ndiaye.
Ndiaye explained the thinking: "I wanted to understand how Kobe did things. So that we could learn from him. Victor is not like anybody else. We have to be creative to build programs that are unique to him."
Those lessons, methodical offence, defensive intensity, and killer instinct are on display now every time Wembanyama steps on the floor. At 22 with his ceiling yet to rise, maybe the league is witnessing the start of 15 years of dominance.
Do you think any teams in the league can actually stop Wembanyama right now? Leave a comment below.
