"LeBron was expected to win by himself?”Shannon Sharpe Fires Back at Critics Questioning LeBron James’ Lakers Legacy

LeBron James' retirement news started a debate about what he accomplished during his time in purple and gold. But one voice is pushing back hard against the narrative.

Shannon Sharpe addressed the growing criticism surrounding the star's tenure in Los Angeles. Speaking on Nightcap, the former NFL star slammed media members and fans who are trying to diminish what was achieved over the last eight years.

Sharpe stated, “Kobe won by himself? Who won by himself? Nobody has won by themselves,” Sharpe said. “Nobody has won a championship by themself. Larry Bird had other Hall of Famers… Jordan had Pippen. So all these had the Top 50 players. So only LeBron was expected to win by himself?”

According to a report by the Basketball Network, Sharpe felt the wave of negativity after the official departure news arrived. The main reason for all this backlash is simple.

Critics argue that one ring in eight years is a disappointment for a franchise as historic as Los Angeles.

Many people online pointed out that the front office gave James everything he requested, including trading for Anthony Davis.

Bryant did not win his five titles alone. He played alongside Shaquille O'Neal for the first three, and later had an All-NBA partner in Pau Gasol.

Similarly, Bird had legendary teammates like Kevin McHale and Robert Parish in the 1980s. Even Michael Jordan needed Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman to complete his championship runs with the Chicago Bulls.

Sharpe then pointed out that players like Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee and Nikola Jokic in Denver have also spent long stretches with their teams while winning just one championship. Yet, nobody calls them failures for not winning multiple rings.

The debate over legacy won’t stop soon, but looking at the facts shows why the narrative set by fans and media is baseless.

The Numbers Behind LeBron James' Time with the Lakers

James brought the franchise its 17th NBA championship in 2020 and won the Finals MVP award. He earned 8 All-Star selections and 7  All-NBA honors while wearing a Lakers jersey.

Apart from that, he broke the all-time scoring record held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar while playing for the team, and even made history by sharing the court with his son, Bronny James.

The peak of this entire era was the 2020 championship run inside the Orlando bubble. During that regular season, James adjusted his game and led the entire NBA in total assists.

As per Basketball Reference, he averaged 27.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game.

In the Finals against the Miami Heat, he averaged 29.8 points and 11.8 rebounds and also won a unanimous Finals MVP.

Before James signed with the team in 2018, the team dealt with consecutive losing seasons and missed the playoffs completely. James’ presence brought back national television appeal and created the environment that attracted Davis via trade.

When he moved into his 40s, the roster dealt with injuries to key contributors Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic. Despite missing them, James became the primary option once again and led the team from the front.

What are your thoughts on where this era ranks in basketball history?
