“Like the WWE”: NBA Fans Slam Refs After ‘Clueless’ On-Court Decision During Cavs-Mavs Clash

Over the past few years, officiating has been a major talking point in the NBA world, and the debate only grew louder during the Cavaliers-Mavericks game at the American Airlines Center. But before we get to it, here's the blunder that reignited the widespread discussion about the NBA's officiating standards.

During the third quarter of the game on Friday, the Cavaliers called a timeout after a turnover by the Mavericks' Khris Middleton. But the inbound was wrongly awarded to the Mavericks under the basket they were attacking, instead of it being given to the Cavaliers.

Furthermore, the Mavericks' Caleb Martin passed the ball to Brandon Williams, who began advancing towards the wrong basket. It took the intervention of Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson, who questioned the play, leading the game to be halted.

The officiating mistake didn't go unnoticed by the NBA world, as commentators like 77 WABC's Mike Daddino asked, "How are NBA refs so clueless?"

And while the Cavaliers went on to win the game 138-105 after the error was corrected, the bizarre sequence has fueled the fire, contributing to conversations surrounding the current state of officiation in the NBA.

Fans Compare the NBA to the WWE

As the strange incident started going viral, a frustrated fan didn’t hold back, writing, “The NBA is like the WWE, just entertainment. If I had the money, I would start a new league of professional basketball where all rules are enforced.”

Another fan mirrored a similar sentiment, commenting, "The NBA is part sport, part WWE. The sooner you accept this, the less frustrated you'll be."

But the comparisons to the WWE aren't new; veterans like Derek Fisher have been vocal about the similarities and have raised concerns about the NBA in recent years as far back as 2024.

The former Lakers guard and five-time NBA champion, during an appearance on The Fastbreak, highlighted how modern NBA often focuses more on entertainment than on competitive value.

He further compared the league's transition to the significant changes made when the WWF became the WWE.

"It is built more for the entertainment value maybe than the competitive value. In previous generations, it was designed like a battle, a war. Gladiator, so to speak, and it doesn't mean the guys now aren't tough; they’re soft. I'm not saying that," Derek Fisher said.

He added, "I know that is said in some conversations, but that's not what I'm saying; it's definitely a different way for them to show up and compete."

That being said, no public statement has been made by any of the parties involved in the Cavaliers-Mavericks game yet.
