Former NBA player Lou Williams believes Steve Kerr's two-year contract extension with the Golden State Warriors is a bigger deal than the consensus is viewing it as. Williams feels this move will help them re-enter the winning column this time.
In a recent edition of FanDuel TV’s Run It Back, Williams opined that the Warriors will be going all out for a championship run on the backs of Kerr and Steph Curry, in what can be their fifth ring together.
“This says ‘We got 2 years to win a championship.’ Steve Kerr’s never been a developmental coach… They’re gonna try to put some major players around Steph Curry to make a legitimate run,” Williams said.
Kerr will remain in the Bay Area for two more years, after both sides agreed on a $35 million contract extension that makes him the highest-paid coach in the league.
And it is only right that the Warriors also have the services of the highest-earning player, Steph Curry. The duo last won a chip in the historical 21-22 season, where No.30 carried the Warriors to their seventh NBA championship.
Since then, it has been a rollercoaster for Kerr and co. who have not reached even the Western Conference Finals.
Last year, the Warriors made a Hail Mary attempt to build a solid foundation around Stephen Curry and chase another championship by acquiring Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat at the trade deadline.
However, Butler suffered a season-ending injury in January, leaving the Warriors trying to acquire the services of another star player from the Milwaukee Bucks, Giannis Antetokounmpo. But the power forward ended up staying.
In the 2026 offseason, the Golden State Warriors now face the task of surrounding 38-year-old Stephen Curry with enough talent in hopes of making one final championship push in the Steve Kerr era.
They currently have the 11th pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and several tradable contracts that could land them the win-now players to maximize the last bit of their championship window.
While the offseason is set to be a busy one in the Bay Area, Steve Kerr and the Warriors could not be more content to continue their historic journey together for the next two years.
Steve Kerr's First Words After Agreeing to Continue at the Bay Area
Since taking over in 2014, Steve Kerr has been one of the most important figures in the Golden State Warriors organization, helping build an unforgettable dynasty that will be discussed for years to come.
Under Kerr, the Warriors won four NBA championships and reached the NBA Finals every year from 2015 to 2019.
On May 12, ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel shared Kerr’s first public comments regarding the agreement on X.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue coaching this team. This organization has meant so much to me for the last 12 years – from ownership to our players, our staff, and our fans – and it’s an incredible privilege to be a part of something so special. I’m excited to keep competing with this group.” The 60-year-old said.
Kerr's extension also brings stability for a franchise entering an important stretch, as Curry also approaches the latter stage of his legendary career.
With Kerr and Curry locked in with the Warriors for the next two seasons, the time is now for Golden State to start one final push for the fifth ring of an iconic dynasty.
So, do you think Steve Kerr's extension signifies the Warriors' chances of lifting the NBA championship once again?
