Mitch Johnson Updates Victor Wembanyama's Status as Spurs Star Enters Concussion Protocol

San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson delivered an update on Victor Wembanyama’s concussion. It came after the star big man exited Game 2 against the Portland Trail Blazers following a fall that ruled him out.
When reporters questioned whether Wemby made a hospital visit and took scans following the incident, Johnson dismissed everything and clarified the situation. “I don't believe in any of that. I just know he has a concussion and he is on protocol and obviously has to take proper appropriate steps,” said the 39-year-old coach.
The injury occurred during the 9th-minute mark of the second quarter when Victor Wembanyama challenged Jrue Holiday in an isolation battle. During a spin move, Holiday pulled the chair, causing Wemby to lose balance and fall face-first onto the hardwood. The Spurs star remained briefly on the floor and appeared disoriented before the staff escorted him to the locker room. Later, the team ruled him out due to a concussion.
Typically, NBA players require 3-10 days to clear concussion protocol, depending on the severity of the impact. While there is no confirmed timeline for Victor Wembanyama, Johnson offered his own assessment of the impact, saying, “I think he is okay.”
Moreover, as per the protocol, the player must remain symptom-free before gradually returning to basketball activity. NBA insider Shams Charania later updated that the team would check on him after the mandatory 24-hour pause and determine further. With only two nights remaining for Game 3, the Spurs have a lot to figure out.
San Antonio Spurs' Roster Options Without Victor Wembanyama
Victor Wembanyama getting concussed and his abrupt exit immediately affected the Spurs, as the Blazers leveled the series with a close win. Now that the situation surrounding the concussion protocol has an extremely short window for Wemby’s return for Game 3, the Spurs are in an uncertain situation.
Despite the uncertainty, the Spurs have developed a balanced roster capable of sharing the offensive responsibilities. The team’s multiple scoring options include: De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Devin Vassell on the starting lineup.
Moreover, speaking after the Game 2 loss, Castle said, “We’ve played tough games without him. Obviously, we want everybody healthy and to have him on the court, but I’ll get whatever five guys we have on the court. We’re gonna play like ourselves.” With a 12-6 record without Wemby this season, the Spurs have proven they can survive without the superstar.
Game 3 is scheduled for April 24th at Moda Center in Portland.
