NBA Analyst Reveals Why Victor Wembanyama Has Struggled Against Knicks

Victor Wembanyama entered the 2026 NBA Finals as the most electrifying young player in basketball, but two games into the series, the Knicks have exposed something nobody expected to see from him.

Appearing on NBA Courtside, analyst Michael Wilbon pushed back against the fatigue narrative surrounding Wembanyama's struggles, arguing the issue runs deeper.

Wilbon stated: "This is the first time essentially in multiple games that it's happened. That is part of the equation of you have to, they can't tweak, do you tweak poise and calm? Do you do that or does that have to come organically over time, because that's what I think it is."

The raw statistics subtly support Wilbon's framing. Wembanyama is shooting 26.7 percent from three and 40.5 percent from the field. He has made 10 turnovers in his first two games, including the late error that ended a fast break that could have won the game in the 105-104 Game 2 defeat.

The argument for mental composure is strengthened by the timeline of Game 2. Wembanyama was obviously passive in the face of New York's physicality, scoring just seven points on 2-of-4 shooting in the first half.

He scored 22 points in the second half to help close a 14-point deficit, but he missed the game-winning opportunity on the last possession.

The tension at the core of his Finals performance thus far is captured in that scene. His averages of 27.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game show that he is a player with unquestionable talent.

However, the Spurs are behind 2-0, and no front office can quickly produce poise under prolonged pressure.

New York City has been working hard to keep Wembanyama off the court while the basketball community discusses what he needs to improve on the court.

New York City Tries to Keep Wembanyama Busy Before Games 3 and 4

The city's efforts to divert the Spurs' franchise player in advance of Games 3 and 4 at Madison Square Garden have become a plot point of their own, and the Big Apple is putting on a creative welcome for him.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani got things started with a pointed scheduling move, posting on social media: "I'm pleased to invite @Wemby to our second Commission on Government Efficiency hearing on Wednesday, June 10th, 5-8 pm, where we'll be asking the public for their thoughts on how government can run better. Would love to have you there for the whole time!"

Conveniently, the hearing, which was held all the way up in the Bronx, ends just thirty minutes before Game 4 begins. Lincoln Centre's film department also got involved, giving Wembanyama tickets to a Sunday showing of the five-and-a-half-hour movie "1900," which coincided with his visit for what the centre politely called "a work-related trip."

On ESPN, games three and four begin at 8:30 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday, respectively.
