NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Provides Update on Europe Expansion Efforts

Apr 18, 2026, 7:38 PM CUT

The NBA is set to expand its reach beyond the USA, and it turns out the league's future might look very different, as Adam Silver hinted that NBA Europe expansion is gaining momentum.

The latest update came on April 17, during Silver's appearance on The Carton Show. The commissioner shared some thoughts on the NBA's potential in Europe.

While the league is working on a project in partnership with FIBA, Silver noted they are deep in the process right now. He also talked about his vision, which is a day when there will be a full-fledged European NBA division. He mentioned that by the 2030s, supersonic jets could cut flight times drastically, facilitating his goal.

The talent to support this growth is already there. Players like Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, and Victor Wembanyama are the modern European faces of the league. In fact, European players now make up roughly 15% of the league.

However, Silver pointed out a huge gap between popularity and profit. Right now, basketball is the 2nd most popular sport in Europe. Yet, it only generates about 1% of the league's total revenue.

A major problem is the physical arenas. The NBA commissioner explained that many older European venues lack the commercial space required for a modern sports team. They do not have the restaurants, lounges, and retail areas that generate extra income. The goal is to build a profitable place, not just a court.

However, turning this vision into reality involves a very complex structure.

What Comes Next For The European Push?

Back in late 2025 and early 2026, the front office was already meeting with overseas clubs, media companies, and sponsors. They are targeting major markets like London, Paris, Madrid, and Berlin. The working target to launch this project is around October 2027.

Several ownership groups are involved, with team fees projected between $500 million and $1 billion. Right now, Europe stands out as the biggest growth market for the sport outside of North America.

However, there are many issues to overcome. Current flights take over 7 hours, which leads to concerns about player fatigue and tight schedules.

A standalone league comes first, possibly followed by an integrated division way down the road. Yet, this overseas push might redefine the future of the sport.  What are your thoughts about this expansion Idea?
