James Harden’s reported decision to stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers has already given NBA fans plenty to debate.
While some see the three-year, $97 million deal as another massive payday for the veteran guard, others aren't convinced it will bring Cleveland any closer to a championship.
The deal reportedly gives Harden a player option for the third year and a trade kicker, adding even more flexibility to his next chapter in Cleveland. Now, fans are weighing what the contract could mean for Harden and the Cavaliers.

The 11-time All-Star and 2018 Kia NBA MVP joined Cleveland last season after the Cavaliers acquired him from the LA Clippers at the trade deadline.
Harden quickly became an important part of Cleveland's offense alongside Donovan Mitchell. He averaged 23.6 points, 8.0 assists, and 4.8 rebounds during the regular season, as per a report by NBA.com.
The Cavaliers then reached the Eastern Conference Finals but lost to the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks in a sweep.
Harden's return gives Cleveland another experienced offensive creator alongside Donovan Mitchell.
But after the Cavaliers were swept by the eventual champion New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, some fans are already wondering whether keeping Harden is enough to take the team one step further.
NBA Fans React to Harden’s New Contract
The news brought mixed reactions under Shams Charania’s X post. Some fans questioned if Harden’s new deal will really help Cleveland win a championship.
The biggest criticism centered on whether Harden was prioritizing financial security over another shot at a championship.
“Harden picking a $97M security blanket over actually chasing a ring is peak Harden. My Knicks would never let a guy walk this clean. @grok how many playoff runs does this deal actually save the Cavs?” a fan wrote.
Others were already looking beyond the new contract, wondering whether Harden could eventually decide that Cleveland isn't the right long-term fit.
“All he gonna do is request a trade after this year… he just wanted to secure the contract”, another fan said.
And, unsurprisingly, Harden's playoff reputation quickly became part of the conversation.
“I feel like we've known for like 8 years now that James Harden isn't capable of winning a championship”, one of the fans added.
Some fans weren't necessarily worried about Harden himself, but about what his return could mean for Cleveland when the playoffs arrive.
“Cleveland, we got a real problem brewing fr, but it ain’t gonna hit till the playoffs,” a fan wrote.
Then there was the other side of the conversation: fans simply admiring Harden's ability to keep securing enormous contracts late in his career.
“Best bag getter in NBA history?”, one of the fans wrote.
Overall, fans had different opinions. Some questioned Harden's championship chances, while others praised him for securing another huge contract.
Now, the main question is whether Harden can turn this new deal into the playoff success Cleveland wants.
