Draymond Green's recent comment on Charles Barkley drew criticism from Nick Wright on First Things First. The Golden State Warriors star has been spending his offseason making TV appearances.
In the most recent episode of Inside the NBA, Barkley commented that the Warriors’ championship window had closed. “I think the goal is just to not look like you in the Houston Rockets uniform,” Green, who joined the broadcast, said in response about his team’s mentality going into next season. For Wright, it was Barkley's maturity that prevented him from escalating the situation.
“Chuck is an all-time legend, who is 10 times first or second-team All-NBA, who, during his Rockets tenure, which is the worst part of his career, can go blow-for-blow with Draymond’s career,” Wright said. “Draymond should get his facts right on who he’s talking to and what he’s talking about.”
Barkley played the last four years of his career in Houston. During that time, he averaged 16.5 points, 12.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
“The last time Draymond averaged 16 points per game, he was a [Michigan State] Spartan. His senior year in college,” Wright added, comparing Green’s NBA scoring average of 8.7 points.
“This is some of the toxicity of ring culture, where Draymond has convinced himself, ‘I got four rings, you got none, so ultimately, you can’t talk to me,'” Wright said.
Wright concluded that while Green is a future Hall of Famer, Barkley was greater. The two are different players: Barkley is one of the greatest power forwards in NBA history, with an elite ability to score and rebound.
On the other hand, Green is an all-time defender and a great facilitator. Moreover, they are both great friends off the court, and perhaps that’s why Barkley didn’t take much offense at Green’s comments.
Draymond Green could be out of the Warriors this summer
After the Suns defeated the Warriors in the Play-In Tournament, Steve Kerr, Green, and Stephen Curry were seen embracing. The team is expected to decide its future this offseason, and Green's contract status makes him a candidate for trade discussions heading into free agency.
According to Brett Siegel, although Kerr has told the Warriors he wants Green on the roster, the front office might still go in another direction.
“Based on his comments over the last few weeks, it really does seem like that he may have one foot out the door just from his mentality,” Siegel continued. “There’s just certain words and verbiage that he’s used that have hinted at his departure, even though he keeps saying that he wants to stay with the team.”
