Orthopaedic Specialist Confirms Return Timeline for Victor Wembanyama After Rib Contusion

On Victor Wembanyama’s path to the MVP title, a rib injury stood as the thorn. But there’s some light at the end of the tunnel.
While the San Antonio Spurs returned with a 115-102 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on April 6, Wemby fell short with a left rib contusion. However, SpursReport’s Dusty Garza shed some light on his return.
“Depending on the severity, one Orthopaedic Specialist and another Sports Medicine Physician I spoke to in Los Angeles said Wemby might only sit out for a few days”, Garza wrote in his April 9 X post. “But (he) could realistically face missing up to two weeks.”
Wemby can make it back to the court “once the Spurs' medical staff can manage his pain enough to allow him to breathe deeply and move without severe restriction.” But it might involve a “protective flak jacket or heavy padding.”
After colliding with the 76ers’ forward, Paul George, the 7’4 Spurs star missed the entire second half of that game. The Spurs played their next game against the Portland Trail Blazers on April 8 without Wemby on the court.
However, amidst the growing concern of his return right before the playoffs, this much update helps. Moreover, the Spurs coach also had something to say about this.
Mitch Johnson on Victor Wembanyama’s Injury
Having the cornerstone, who has been averaging 24.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists, missing games right before the playoffs is any coach’s worst nightmare. However, the Spurs’ coach didn’t sound grave about Wemby’s injury.
“He has improved quite a bit”, said Johnson. “So, I don't think it's a long-term concern, but we'll obviously be very cautious in the situation and circumstances we're under. We'll just kind of take it day by day and see how it goes.”
This is an MVP candidate whose absence will impact both his team and his own individual run. But from Johnson’s reaction and Garza’s update, it sounds like it wouldn’t be long before Wemby hits the hardwood.
Moving forward, all eyes will be on Wembanyama’s performance once he returns.
But do you think he is returning within the time Garza mentioned? Let us know in the comments.
