'Should Be Suspended Already': Fans React as Wemby Draws Flagrant 1 for Elbowing KAT in Game 4

Victor Wembanyama found himself at the center of an officiating debate in Game 4 in the 2026 NBA Finals. Wembanyama is now sitting just one point away from a mandatory suspension.

The young center was defending Karl-Anthony Towns during a possession for the New York Knicks. As Towns moved to create space, Wembanyama swung his right arm in a defensive motion, but his elbow made direct contact with Towns’ chin.

The officials stopped play to review the contact, and then upgraded the whistle to a Flagrant 1 foul for unnecessary contact to the head. Since a Flagrant 1 does not lead to an ejection, Wembanyama remained in the game. A clip of the play shared by UnderdogNBA on X went viral.

This specific Flagrant 1 gave Wembanyama his 3rd  flagrant point of the 2026 postseason.

The drama on the court only worsened for the Spurs as the Knicks completed a historic comeback, winning Game 4 by a score of 107-106 after trailing by as many as 29 points.

This situation connects to earlier moments in the postseason. Wembanyama entered Game 4 already carrying two flagrant points from a previous Flagrant 2 ejection against Naz Reid of the Minnesota Timberwolves during the Western Conference Semifinals.

Back in Game 3, Wembanyama had pushed Jalen Brunson in the upper body. The post-game review of the play after the game, confirmed that it should have been a foul, but declined to upgrade it to a flagrant.

Had the NBA assessed a Flagrant 1 for that shove, Wembanyama would have started Game 4 with three points, meaning the elbow on Towns would have triggered a suspension for Game 5.

This scenario is why fans flooded social media with complaints about league consistency.

Fans Polarized Over Victor Wembanyama's Physicality and Size Advantage

The replay’s comment section revealed how fans split into two sides during this championship series.

A user posted, "Dirtiest player in the league, he should be suspended already," showing the frustration shared by many Knicks fans who feel Wembanyama should have sat out earlier.

Others backed this up by analyzing the math behind the playoff point system.

Another fan commented, "He would have been suspended for Game 5 had they upgraded his foul on Brunson in Game 3. Makes you wonder," implying that the league's previous decisions might be favoring the Spurs.

Another fan backed that logic and wrote, "If they got him for the flagrant he deserved against Brunson last game, he’d be suspended for Game 5."

On the other side of the debate, a large group of fans felt the flagrant upgrade was an overreaction by the officials. A fan defended the play by writing, "Yoooooo that wasn’t intentional though," pointing out that the arm swing lacked any foul intentions.

Others went even further to criticize how the play was handled on the floor. For example, a fan fit his argument by saying, "That wasn’t even intentional lmfao Kat really flopped," accusing Towns of forcing a review.

Whether you see these plays as intentional or not, the reality is that Wembanyama is now on the brink of suspension.

Do share your take on whether this play deserved a flagrant or not.
