Spurs Face Historic NBA Finals Challenge After Dropping First Two Home Games

After two games, the San Antonio Spurs face an uphill climb for their first NBA title in over a decade. They lost Game 2 at Frost Bank Arena on June 5, 2026, and went down 0-2 in the NBA Finals series against the New York Knicks.

The Spurs have responded well to the pressure. Throughout this playoff, they have been coming out with a response in a must-win game. But not against the Knicks. After Friday's loss, the Spurs have a long fight against history.

Throughout NBA history, no team has ever won the NBA Finals after going down 0-2 in the first two home games. This is a grim reality for the Spurs as they are now set to face the Knicks in front of a hostile New York crowd.

The Spurs started Game 2 with the same intensity as Game 1, but they appeared more composed. They entered the second quarter with a nine-point lead, but in the next 12 minutes, New York had taken a four-point lead.

The closely contested matchup ended at 105-104 in the Knicks favor. Karl-Anthony Towns led with 21 points, with Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges each adding 20 points. In contrast, Wemby had only so much support on the offense. He scored 29 points, followed by De'Aaron Fox with 20 points.

The comeback is certainly not impossible for the Spurs. The best plan for the Spurs is now to take one game at a time. If they win Game 3 in New York, they will have a big psychological advantage.

After Game 2, the younger Spurs rotation seems to be giving way to the Knicks' veteran playmaking.

The Spurs' Numbers Highlight Their Inexperience

After two games of the NBA Finals, the Spurs and Knicks' numbers reflect that it has been a very close series. However, there are certain areas where the Knicks veteran experience has stood out, simultaneously exposing the Spurs' lack of playoff experience.

Both teams' rebounds and fouls barely differ from each other. However, the numbers show that the Knicks have distributed the ball better and taken better care of it.

Karl-Anthony Towns has been able to curtail Wemby's defensive impact. He successfully brought Wemby away from the paint, leaving the Spurs vulnerable. The Knicks have made the most of those opportunities.

Even the Knicks' secondary stars attacked the Spurs' defense and found success. The Knicks have been able to penetrate and neutralize the Spurs' defense to a very large extent, which has turned the series in their favor.

To give the Spurs the benefit of the doubt, they did play a seven-game series against the OKC Thunder. The Knicks were well-rested compared to the Spurs.

Do you think the Spurs will be able to make a historic comeback to win the series? Let us know in the comments.
