Steve Kerr Breaks Silence on Losing Composure Against His Warriors Star

Mar 17, 2026, 11:01 AM CUT

As the Golden State Warriors watched a 21-point lead slip away against the New York Knicks, head coach Steve Kerr couldn’t hide his frustration on the sideline.

At one point, the 60-year-old directed an animated reaction toward rookie Will Richard after a play that wasn’t entirely his fault. After the game, though, Kerr addressed the moment, openly admitting he overreacted and explaining what led to his sideline outburst.

"I thought he (Richard) could have caught the ball," said Steve Kerr. “I was mad at Will because I thought he could have corralled the ball and not thrown," Kerr admitted, who was already frustrated with how the team played in the second quarter.

“I was upset with him,” Kerr further added, but showed remorse. “I kind of regret losing my composure a little bit there. It’s my job to keep the guys going, especially when we’re without so many players,” said the coach.

The sequence began when Podziemski tried to hit Richard on a fast break, but the pass was too long and forced Richard to chase it toward the sideline. As he fell out of bounds, Richard threw the ball back into play, but it bounced off Podziemski and resulted in a turnover.

Steve Kerr Also Put the 23-Year-Old Golden State Warriors on Notice

Only Brandin Podziemski was the only one from the October starting lineup as they blew a 21-point lead.

With regular starters like Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and more, out due to injury or fatigue, rookie Will Richard ended up starting and played 29 minutes. That's when Podziemski made the pass.

That's when NBC microphones picked him up shouting, “God****, the ball matters! The ball is everything!”

When speaking to reporters, he said the bad pass from Podziemski put Richard in a tough spot. At first, Steve Kerr thought Richard was trying to do something fancy. However, he clarified that the bigger issue was the original pass, which created the chaotic situation.

Now, with four weeks left in the regular season, the Warriors have 15 games remaining. They are likely headed for the eighth, ninth, or 10th seed, depending on Curry’s health and the situation with Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Steve Kerr has shown clear frustration lately, and some people close to him believe he could walk away after the season.

So, if the Warriors finish in the play-in range, can Steve Kerr still guide the team to a deep run despite the current roster struggles? Tell us what you think in the comments.
