Steve Kerr Opens Up on Difference Between Michael Jordan & LeBron James' Greatness

Steve Kerr’s career provides him with a unique vantage point on basketball greatness. Kerr recently weighed in on the long-standing comparison between Michael Jordan and LeBron James.
Steve Kerr made these revealing comments in a recent interview with The New Yorker.
After the Warriors' exit from the play-in tournament, Steve Kerr said, “LeBron’s brilliance doesn’t lie in the same skill set that Michael’s did. It lies in more of a holistic game where he dominates with his pace, his athleticism, and his passing. I’ve always felt scoring is secondary for LeBron, but he’s the greatest scorer in the history of the N.B.A.!”
“Yeah, incidentally. Some of that is longevity: he’s a machine. I mean, I think he’s literally the greatest athlete on the face of the planet and in the course of human history,” Kerr added.
Kerr has played against Jordan 20 times, so he knows this from experience. Jordan tore through the league, taking 16 of them and averaging about 35 points a game.
But Jordan's dominance can't overshadow what James has built statistically. 40,000+ points over 23 seasons compared to Jordan's 15, more career rebounds, assists, and Win Shares of 274.8 to Jordan's 214.0.
Jordan averaged a dazzling 41 points per game. Jordan's Finals record stays immaculate, and his scoring titles are still the benchmark.
But James has become, without fanfare, the most complete player the game has ever produced, still putting up near triple-double averages in the 2026 playoffs at age 41. He is currently averaging roughly 25.3 PPG, 9.7 RPG, and 8.7 APG.
Steve Kerr never coached James in the NBA, but led him on Team USA during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
But while the Olympics were a triumph, the real question now is what comes next for Kerr closer to home.
Steve Kerr's Future With the Golden State Warriors Remains Uncertain
Steve Kerr is dealing with one of the biggest decisions of his coaching career. His contract is up after establishing a dynasty over 12 years in Golden State.
The Warriors' early exit has increased pressure on the coaching staff. A decision on his extension is expected shortly.
Steve Kerr was not afraid to address the uncertainty in his New Yorker interview. "I think Steph's going to play another couple of years, and I think we can still do some good things together," he said.
However, the Warriors' front office is reportedly hesitant about a straightforward extension. Golden State is demanding that Kerr overhaul his entire coaching philosophy if he wants to stay, according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Anthony Slater.
That’s a big ask for a coach who has delivered four championship rings to the franchise.
Should the Warriors bring Kerr back, or is it time for a new era in Golden State? Let us know in the comments below.
