If you missed the opening game of the Western Conference Finals, then you have probably missed a moment that people will talk about for years. A game flipped the script on the NBA playoffs, and it all centers around Victor Wembanyama
Victor Wembanyama just delivered a historic 41-point and 24-rebound performance to lead the Spurs over the Thunder. The dominant Game 1 win in the Western Conference Finals immediately shifted the NBA championship narrative. Stephen A. Smith declared the league now belongs to the young star after the 122-115 double-overtime thriller.
ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith could not control his excitement and took to X to share his thoughts. He posted the following message on 19th May, 2026.
"This man @wemby!Good Lord have mercy! The league is HIS. Unreal performance. Not so much for @shaiglalexon his MVP-Award night, and certainly not for @ChetHolmgren.It’s only Game 1, but what a statement, a message, by @wemby and the @spurs. Game 2 will determine if we even have a series, if @Wemby is gonna look like this!"
Wembanyama played a career-high 49 minutes and carried the load on both ends of the floor. He finished the game with 41 points, 24 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocked shots.
He scored 20 of his points in the 4th quarter and the two overtime periods combined. He also hit a 28-foot three-pointer late in the first overtime to push the second extra period.
At just 22 years and 134 days old, he became the youngest player in NBA history to record a 40-point and 20-rebound game in the playoffs. He also joined Wilt Chamberlain as one of only two players to ever record a 40-20 stat line in a conference finals debut.
Additionally, he joined David Robinson as the only players in Spurs history to achieve those numbers in a postseason matchup. Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 24 points and 12 assists, but he struggled with his shot, going just 7-for-23 from the field.
Meanwhile, Chet Holmgren had a difficult time matching up with Wembanyama. Holmgren was held to just 8 points and 8 rebounds. The opening game showed everyone that the regular-season standings might not matter anymore in this matchup.
Victor Wembanyama Is Turning the 2026 Playoffs Into His Personal Arrival Story
Wembanyama has been the breakout star of the entire postseason. He entered the Western Conference Finals averaging nearly 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 blocks per game.
Earlier in the playoffs, he set a single-game NBA playoff record by blocking 12 shots in a game against the Timberwolves. That performance made him the youngest player ever to record a postseason triple-double with blocks.
Wembanyama remained grounded during his postgame press conference."Winning one game means something, but it doesn't mean everything," Wembanyama told reporters.
He added that he still has a lot to learn and wants to earn the championship trophy many times throughout his career. Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday night, and it will show if Oklahoma City can make adjustments.
If the Thunder cannot find a way to slow down the young star, this series could be over quickly.
Do you think the Thunder can bounce back, or is the series already over?
