"There Would be No Board": Rich Paul Explains Why Knicks Aren't a Confirmed Option for LeBron James

The free agency of LeBron James has taken an unexpected turn that nobody saw coming. A whiteboard reveal became one of the biggest talking points of the entire discussion.

Rich Paul appeared on the Game Over podcast on July 3, 2026. During the episode, the agent brought out a physical whiteboard. The board mapped out the realistic free-agency options for James.

Paul revealed during the show that the front office in New York had checked in about the superstar. "If the Knicks hadn’t won [the championship], there would be no board. He’d be going to the Knicks."

The Game Over podcast is co-hosted by Paul and Max Kellerman in association with The Ringer and Spotify. This admission made it clear that New York would have been the absolute destination if the team had fallen short in the postseason.

The success of the franchise flipped the script on this potential signing. New York just secured its first NBA championship since 1973 by defeating the San Antonio Spurs.

The roster built identity around Finals MVP Jalen Brunson. Paul stated that Brunson would literally have to pick up the phone and welcome the move personally.

The agent emphasized that it is now Brunson's show, and everyone must respect what the current roster has built without disrupting a winning locker room.

If New York had lost the Finals, the franchise would have been seen as one superstar away from a title.

James would have likely signed there to chase a ring. Because the team already won the trophy, the urgency disappeared.

The franchise remains listed on the whiteboard, but it is no longer the obvious or necessary choice for either side. Paul confirmed that he has heard from every single team in the league as his client searches for the perfect fit.

The details on the physical board give a clear look into how teams are positioning themselves.

The 10 Teams in Play: Where Rich Paul Sees Real Contenders

The forward officially informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he will play his 24th NBA season elsewhere. Paul also shut down any rumors suggesting that the upcoming season will be the final year of his career.

Strong family support from his wife, Savannah, and daughter, Zhuri, to keep playing. According to reporting from CBS Sports, the physical whiteboard lists 10 different franchises in the mix.

The teams include the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, and New York Knicks.

Some franchises stand out as the top landing spots on the list. A return to Cleveland offers a homecoming angle alongside a talented young core, where assistant general manager Brandon Weems is close with James.

The Miami Heat provides familiarity with Erik Spoelstra and Pat Riley from past championship runs. Meanwhile, joining the Warriors would allow James to share the court with long-time friends Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.

As a longtime agent and the chief executive officer of Klutch Sports, Paul speaks with authority regarding these negotiations.

The choice now rests on which franchise provides the perfect balance of winning and trust before the new season starts.

What are your thoughts on where the final decision will be made?
