"They Don't Want Him": Skip Bayless Rips Media's Rich Paul-LeBron James Narrative Around Lakers Departure

The narrative around LeBron James’ Lakers exit hinges on one question: who left whom? James’ free agency has dominated the offseason, with reports claiming he and his team informed the Lakers of his decision to depart. Skip Bayless, however, argued that the Lakers themselves forced James out.

James earned $52.6 million last season, a contract that limited the Lakers’ cap flexibility. Bayless claimed the team was “relieved” to see him gone, insisting they didn’t want him back after last year.

"No, Rich Paul did not "inform the Lakers" that LeBron will play elsewhere next season," Bayless wrote in a post on X. "They had already made it clear to him he'd have to take very little money to play for the Lakers BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT HIM BACK. LUKA DOES NOT WANT HIM BACK. Lakers are now relieved."

This framing shifts blame from James to the Lakers; a narrative that could reshape how his exit is remembered.

The salary gap became the breaking point. Bayless’ claim complicates the idea that the Lakers would naturally want James back given his stardom and ability to draw a crowd.

LeBron’s legacy hinges on how this exit is framed, whether he was forced out or chose to leave.

If Bayless is right, James will seek revenge by joining a title contender to prove the Lakers wrong.

Shams Charania reveals the real reason why LeBron James left the Lakers

While Bayless insists the Lakers pushed James out, Shams Charania reported otherwise.

"I'm told this is a happiness-led decision for LeBron James," Charania said on ESPN Sports Center's video on X. "He feels he needs to find his happiness elsewhere, and wherever he lands in free agency, it will not be driven by money."

If James is not chasing money, there is a high chance that he will head to a title-contending team. Rich Paul has previously said that title remains LeBron's top priority.

The Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers have emerged as the top two teams in the running. A union with Stephen Curry would be box office, though the Warriors may still fall short of true title contention.

The Cavaliers, however, are already one of the deepest teams in the league. His addition would make them instant favorites in the East, aligning with his happiness-first priority while also strengthening his legacy.

Where do you feel LeBron will join for the next season? Let us know in the comments.
