Victor Wembanyama Walks Past Reporters Following Rough Game 5 Loss

The noise inside Paycom Center settled after a playoff game. But one moment outside the locker room became the biggest storyline of the night as Victor Wembanyama didn't care about the reporters' questions.

The San Antonio Spurs faced a tough 127-114 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on May 26, falling behind 3-2 in the Western Conference Finals. After the game, a seemingly frustrated Wembanyama exited the locker room after showering and changing into street clothes.

A large crowd of reporters stood waiting in the hallway for the post-game availability. Instead, Wembanyama walked straight past the entire group without saying a word.

The Athletic first reported Wembanyama's unexpected exit after the match. It marked the very first time during the 2025-26 season that the Spurs' No. 1 skipped his media duties.

Players who participate in an NBA game are required by league rules to speak with the media afterward. Because Wembanyama skipped this mandatory session, the league office is reviewing the incident. Players who fail to participate in required media availability may face a fine of $25,000.

In recent years, league officials fined Memphis Grizzlies guard Dillon Brooks $25,000 for skipping media sessions after postseason losses. Additionally, $25,000 penalties were given to Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler.

The decision to skip the session was even more surprising, given his reputation with journalists. Wembanyama was the winner of the 2025-26 Magic Johnson Award, which honors a player for on-court excellence with cooperation when dealing with the media.

The focus now shifts to how the Spurs respond to being on the edge of elimination.

Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs Now Face a Defining Game 6 Moment

The team finished the year with an impressive 62-20 record, securing the second seed in the Western Conference. Wembanyama won the Defensive Player of the Year award. San Antonio defeated Oklahoma City in 6 of their 9 regular-season meetings.

In Game 5, Wembanyama played 38 minutes but scored a series-low 20 points. He struggled to find his rhythm, shooting just 4-for-15 from the field and missing all 5 of his three-point attempts. While he managed to grab 6 rebounds, he was not able to impact the game in his usual fashion.

Guard De'Aaron Fox addressed the reporters inside the locker room during the incident. A team spokesman later informed the media that Wembanyama would not be available for comment.

Later in the evening, teammate Stephon Castle spoke to reporters and noted the uneven physicality of the game.

During the first quarter, Wembanyama had a brief shoulder bump with Chet Holmgren as both players walked toward their benches. Thunder forward Jaylin Williams responded with a physical style of play in the minutes that followed.

San Antonio must now return home for Game 6 on May 29, 2026. All eyes will be on how the team responds on the floor, and whether their franchise player decides to break his silence after the final buzzer.

How do you feel about Wembanyama skipping his media duties after such a tough playoff loss?
