For the first time in nearly a decade, LeBron won't wear the purple and gold of the Lakers for another season. Earlier this week, he made it clear to the team that he intends to move on. However, what's come under question is the why behind the exit.
The narrative around LeBron James' exit is under fans' scrutiny. Following James' decision to leave LA, ESPN's Shams Charania reported that the four-time champion's move was motivated by happiness. This narrative around LeBron's departure sparked a firestorm of skepticism from fans.
"I'm told this is a happiness-led decision for LeBron James. He feels like he needs to find his happiness elsewhere." Charania told Malika Andrews on Tuesday, as posted by SportsCenter on X. "Wherever he lands in free agency, it will not be driven by money, according to sources."
It might be the right move for LeBron. In his eight years spent with the team, James won a championship and saw a roster built around him. However, in the years that followed, it's been clear the team has been looking long-term, and James has supported the same.
They traded Anthony Davis, James' close friend, to the Mavericks in exchange for Luka Dončić. James backed the young superstar, working together with Austin Reaves and Dončić to bring the team into the postseason and pushed them past the Hornets.
However, a majority of last season was spent with a cloud of doubt hanging over his future. Perhaps a move away from the Lakers, to a team where he plays more of a central role, could be the farewell tour that he needs.
In any case, James' decision to depart from LA didn't come right after the last season ended. With his family in Los Angeles and his son playing for the Lakers, it's hard to see that he would leave without negotiations.
According to fans, the Lakers rejected LeBron and not vice versa.
Fans reject "happiness" narrative after LeBron James decides to move on from Lakers
Fans bluntly rejected the Lakers-LeBron breakup narrative by Charania. For some fans, it was just LeBron trying to control his legacy of not being rejected by a team.
“Another way of saying he knows he's not able to get a big contract anymore (which is completely understandable) but wants to control the narrative, saying it's his decision just like leaving the Lakers.”
There's a reason fans may believe so. Last season, ESPN had reported that he had felt disrespected by the Lakers for asking him to take a pay cut, especially when another franchise legend, Kobe Bryant, was given a hefty contract before retirement.
Fans also flipped the happiness narrative and said that James had made the Lakers happy by leaving. “It's very much a happiness move-we Lakers fans are the happy ones. Take Le Flop jr with you,” the fan wrote, referring to Bronny.
LeBron James Jr. has been a talking point amongst the Lakers fanbase for years. Across over 40 games played last season, Bronny managed only 2.9 points per game, with some fans believing LeBron James is the star who guarantees his son a spot on the team. That's why one fan added: “Whoever it is has to take the baggage known as Bronny."
With James gone, there are speculations about Bronny’s future. For some fans, Bronny was also taking salary space with the team, and wanted the four-time champion to take his son with him.
“What destination would bring greater happiness than playing with your son? The decision is ONLY about money are you kidding?” the fan wrote.
However, some fans were happy with James choosing to get away from a team that disrespected him.
“Happy for him, the disrespect was too much, in life always know your worth,” the fan wrote.
The Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers are two of the top destinations for James so far. In the Bay Area, he has a chance to team up with one of his greatest rivals, and in Cleveland, he has a chance to end his NBA chapter with the team that gave him the most love.
