After Steve Kerr agreed to return as the Warriors' head coach with a two-year extension, the Bay Area team faces fresh trouble. Two prominent figures in the front row coaching staff departed, and the Warriors' dynasty era might face another reset.
It has been four seasons since the Warriors won a championship. The most the team could reach was the West semis in the 2024-25 season. Two major contributors to that run were lead assistant coaches Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse. The pair joined Kerr's staff during that run.
Stotts took care of the offensive system while Stackhouse led the defensive side. With both their contracts expiring this past season, they have decided to part ways, as per ESPN's Anthony Slater.
Terry Stotts came into the fold with over three decades of coaching experience that included nine seasons as Blazers head coach. Now, he looks to return to a head coach role. Speaking of his departure, he added, “My two years there were fulfilling, nothing but well wishes.”
Jerry Stackhouse reportedly also plans to pursue head coaching opportunities. His influence on the Warriors has stood out, especially with the team’s offensive leader, Draymond Green.
“Stackhouse has been huge for me, just the relatability,” Green once said. He considered him an "extreme alpha" who respects and appreciates others.
On the other hand, Stotts played an influential role in building the Warriors' second unit. With Steph Curry, Moses Moody, and Jimmy Butler missing the majority of the second half this past season, the team witnessed the emergence of Brandin Podziemski and Gui Santos.
Santos subsequently signed a contract extension of three years at $15 million.
Warriors hunt for assistant coaching staff replacement
The team remains in the early stages of finding replacements. According to ESPN, former Pelicans coach Willie Green has emerged as the frontrunner.
Notably, Green has already been part of the Dubs coaching team since 2016 and served for the following three seasons.
Moreover, Steve Kerr seemed determined to bring back the glory days. In his meetings with Joe Lacob and Mike Dunleavy Jr. before committing to return next season, Kerr left a strong message.
According to ESPN’s Wright Thompson, Kerr asked, “How do we coach this team? How do we get our mojo back?" Kerr’s query remains the focal point for the franchise this summer, as the team not only resets the coaching team but also the supporting cast around Curry.
With Giannis Antetokounmpo available in the market, this offseason can get very interesting.
