Watch: Throwback to When Pistons Legend Isiah Thomas Punched His Opponent

Tensions in the NBA have always led to unforgettable moments, but some cross the line from competition into confrontation. One such moment got the Pistons legend Isiah Thomas involved in an untoward altercation with his rival.
Known for his toughness and competitive fire, Thomas was stubborn and never backed off, but the incident on April 19, 1990, during the Detroit Pistons vs. Philadelphia 76ers game showed just how quickly things could accelerate.
During the match, the 76ers player, Rick Mahorn, restricted the smaller-statured Thomas from snatching the ball away. Since Thomas couldn't do much before the towering Mahorn, he ended up throwing a punch out of frustration.
The reaction from commentators captured the shock of the moment, with one calling out, “Isiah just threw a punch! Isiah is a history! He’s gone!”
What made the moment even more striking was Mahorn’s response, or let’s say lack of response. Even after being on the receiving end, he barely reacted, standing his ground without pushing the situation further. The contrast between Thomas’ emotional outburst and Mahorn’s calmness added to the clip’s lasting impact.
Players themselves acknowledged the edge of the moment. Later, Rick Mahorn admitted, “I guess it was just the intensity of the moment.”
This wasn’t entirely out of character for the Pistons of that era. There was one more brawl that made the match more ugly.
The Second Scuffle in the Detroit Pistons vs. Philadelphia 76ers Game
The next brawl came with 14.8 seconds left in the game, but even that couldn't restrict the 76ers from achieving a W over their opponents. But even the second altercation involved Mahorn, who didn't seem to have the time to catch a break.
It started with Bill Lambier shoving the ball into Mahorn's face without any specific purpose. The incident also got several other members involved in it. The NBA imposed a league record $162,500 fine and suspended Laimbeer, Hastings, and Barkley for one game each.
The league charged Laimbeer and Barkley $20,000, Hastings $10,000 and each team $50,000 for not having control over their players. Isaiah Thomas of the Pistons was also fined $7,500 for throwing a punch at Mahorn earlier.
Five players on each team were hit with $500 fines for coming off the bench during the brawl. Barkley was not worried about getting fined, as he was later escorted from the court after a fan tried to hit him.
Ultimately, the competition blurred into a fight, leaving a lasting mark on NBA history.
While this scuffle was one of the most startling ones in NBA history, do you remember any other incident that you feel is comparable?
